Hi peeps, am hoping someone can help with this. Bit of an odd one & a long winded explanation (apologies).

Reformatted my desktop with Windows 7 x64. I had issues with the operating system freezing up just after start & roughly every 30 mins-1hr later. The mouse pointer would move around but I could not click on anything. This always happened just after start up & then randomly after. The only way around this was to hit ctrl, alt & delete to bring up the windows lock, task manager etc screen. One click anywhere on this screen & it became usable again.

Tried various re-installs & drivers with no luck. Weird thing is that when windows starts for the 1st time after installing there is no problem, it worked perfectly. As soon as the computer is restarted (with or without driver installation) it starts having the freeze up problem.

That motherboard died just before Christmas. I replaced the old board with a gigabyte ga-m68m-s2p. I have the exact same problem. Windows installs all fine, then after restart the freezing problem starts again. I have been using the same hardware (bar the mobo) for a while now with no issues.

Below are the system specs & the trouble shooting carried out so far.

Gigabyte ga-m683-s2p
2x 2gb kingston HyperX T1 DDR2 1066mhz
AMD Phenom II 920 quad
Sapphire 4670 gpu
Random 500w psu
LG DVD rom
Corsair H50
ESI Maya 44 sound card
500GB WD 7200 HDD

Checked memory timings & mem tested all clear.
Borrowed some Ram & tried that set, still the same problem.
Tried without the ATI GPU & just used on the on-board nvidea gpu. No change.
Changed mobo as previously mentioned. Still same prob.
Checked all temps are not excessive. All running cool.
Tried using drivers supplied with mobo & also tried using the most recent drivers available.
Flashed the Bios to the newest incarnation.
Tried different versions on Win 7 x64 Ultimate.
Tried a different hard drive. no difference.

I did note that the ram I have is not on the mobos supported ram list. I am reluctent to replace the ram for the following reasons. 1: The kingston ram ran fine for about a year before me reformatting & having this issue. 2: The system works fine up until the 1st restart. This strikes me as being a problem with the OS or poss some drivers Windows 7 installs automatically in the back ground on the 1st restart.

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

Try swapping out the PSU - they can cause all sorts of weird and wonderful problems. Had a issue where my PC would run no probs then it would hang and not reboot for a while, keep rebooting and rebooting hanging at various stages then eventually would load to Windows. It could then be a few mins to a few days before it went again. Long story short I swapped the PSU for a Higher Powered one and the probs went.

np - make sure you get an overpowered one ready for when you upgrade the system or add more drives - that way if its not that it will still be usefull

I have now swapped out the psu for a 700W psu which is way more than I need. The only thing that is left that hasn't been replaced is the cpu & I don't think it is that. Has got to be some sort of driver conflict. Anyone have any suggestions I am all ears. Am about ready to tear my hair out.

so to be clear, ... you've tried removing/swapping out the mobo, psu, ram, graphics card and hard drive... and you've reinstalled windows?

Wow... that pretty much leaves the following options/considerations:
1) bad cpu processor
2) some type of issue with one of the remaining components connected into the board
- sound card, mouse, keyboard, dvd drive, etc....
3) bad mount between the motherboard and case.. causing some type of short

I would first try a new mouse and keyboard, to rule that out, and then if you still have a problem, remove the external soundcard and all your other sata/ide drives other than your primary c drive.... to rule out some type of issue with those as well

What are you using for a mouse?

I'd suspect whatever mouse drivers your system is using.

This may seem out of left field but do you have bonjour (am Apple program) loaded on your HD? It usually comes with iTunes and is for transferring files to an Ipod. I had many of the same problems you described and found out in the error log that bonjour was the culprit. I removed it and all is well. If this is the case be sure to disable it in services also.

Hi there

thank you all for your replies & help. I have replaced so far the mobo, ram, hard drive, graphics card, psu & re-installed windows multiple times. When I re-install windows there is no sign of an issue directly after windows starts up for the first time. The problem arises after the first time the pc is shut down & restarted which is what led me to believe it was a driver issue.

I have tried a different keyboard & have also downloaded the official drivers my my Logitech G7 mouse (also thought that may have been the prob). No joy with either.

I don't think it is an issue with the mobo mounting. Had this problem with the previous mobo which I have replaced. Was quite careful when installing the new one. Could not see any issue's at all.

The CPU is only about a year old. The problem only appeared after re-installing Windows so I'm not overly convinced its that. Well not convinced enough to buy a new cpu.

No apple software at all installed. Will try a spare mouse I have in a second & pull out the sound card to see if that has any effect. Will update here asap.

In the meantime if anyone else has any ideas I'm all ears.

Thanks again
