But it failed for the same reason, they ran out of other peoples money.

Because not everyone was paying their fair share, and they didn't do enough to discourage free riders from camping out. There was a good story on NPR...their biggest issue wasn't breaking even financially...they were doing quite well in the beginning. But then this kind of place attracted poor, destitute and homeless...and well-to-do suddenly didn't want to eat there anymore (complaints about bathroom sanitation, smelly people etc.)

This kind of experiment was never meant to be sustainable.

Isn’t communism just when @ssholes take the reigns of socialism?
Communism and socialism are at complete different ends of the spectrum. I know it is very hard to tell the difference nowadays when such retardation like this is said and cheered.

What the hell is the matter with this country when a statement like that is just bought? It isn't true (most democrats run on Medicare for all or some sort of expansion of it) and doesn't make sense (Medicare is a social program). Just say democrats and socialism in the same sentence and the context doesn't matter no matter how absurd. Bonus points for the Venezuela equated to social programs strawman. Let's just stop raiding the social security fund and just get rid of it entirely! It will turn us into Venezuela!!!!!!!!!!!

Note: I do not know the owner of this twitter account and do not support them, it was just a succinct clip that showed up in a quick search.

Say sometime enough times and people will believe it. - Herman Goebbels, minister of propaganda, Third Reich

Goebbels' relationship to CIA's 1945-1960 Psy-war projects and GRU's election-hacking was similar to John Locke's influence on the US Constitution. You would call them both "grandfathers".

The Panera experiment was an experiment in sustainable non-profit giving from a company that had a bottom-line profit margin.

Taxes aren't charity. They are an obligation. Government employees aren't volunteers -- they have to be paid. Real charities have a sizeable resource component of volunteerism.

Public goods are only a collective form of altruism, reflecting a collective will, whether it's a matter of pure public goods or transfers and subsidies.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with using "socialist" tools to solve the collective problems of a nation-state or the world. We are not going to solve the national health care problem through regulated markets for health insurance alone. That's why there was a tax mandate in the ACA, and it made perfectly good sense: the uninsured are a burden to society whether they're healthy or not. There's no reason why the collective public should not bear a reasonable share of health-care costs of medical rights for indigent people with -- or without -- pre-existing conditions.

Otherwise, to say that the indigent or patients with pre-existing conditions should just die because of some social Darwinist zero-sum competition in the civilized nation state -- will make the nation-state and capitalism fail.

Nor does the use of socialist tools as government programs increase much of a risk for "creeping" toward totalitarian socialism. And if you made lots of money in a capitalist economy, it was partly for the lower risks achieved through regulation, partly because of imperfect competition over some range including monopolist extremes. If you have the advantage as an unregulated monopolist to charge whatever you please from your captive customer-base, you are "more free" than people subject to risk -- as they might be for, say, health risk. Your money is not "just your money". Nor should it be entirely a matter of your altruistic discretion. You benefit from the nation-state, and you are responsible for it to the extent that your benefits rise above some level of just buying and consuming "stuff".

Trump-ism wrong. Mixed economy right. Trump-ism wrong. Mixed economy right.

Freedom should be finite in the nation-state, and part of the purpose of the nation-state is to provide justice to all, and greater economic security to the largest number of people.
