Dear Beloved AT geniuses. Please advise.

So this morning I tried plugging in a small dual (female) fan plug (the one that is responsible for the LED on the fan) into a regular triple (male) fan outlet on my mobo. It was previously plugged into the bottom two prongs without result so I left it like that until this morning, when I decided to plug it into the top two. What followed really sucked. I turned the bad boy on, the fan started to smoke a bit, so I immediately turned the system off. Disconnected the fan altogether and tried to boot the system up. It went into windows and hung after like 30 seconds. I turned the system off and tried to reboot again, now it started hanging right after the mem test. Pulled everything out (including the cmos battery), with no result. I also shuffled around the mem sticks which didn't help either. Now the system starts but won't post at all. Also the beep noise that usually accompanied the boot is no longer there. So did I fry my mobo or the south bridge? And of course is there any chance to revive this guy?

Thanks AT

Sounds like your motherboard it toast. Depending on how you connected the fan you may have applied fan ground to MB power among other things. You probably burned up a trace or resistor.

On a three pin female fan connector, the black wire (ground) is pin 1. Red wire (+12VDC or +5VDC) is pin 2 (middle). Yellow wire on pin 3 is a speed sense/Tachometric Signal.

You made me hungry. I'm going to KFC now to get some extra crispy fried chicken.

hahah KFC is the best. Thanks for reassuring me. The only thing that gave me hope was the fact that it booted into the actual OS, even though it was very brief. Now my last question that I should have mentioned: is there any chance that the PSU might be fried in addition to the mobo, heck along with the other components?

Thanx.

Your PSU is most likely ok. It seems to be turning the computer on, the computer just doesn't seem to be responding. Pretty sure the only well-done component here is your motherboard. Buy a new motherboard and then go from there.
