Police: Man mentioned sex assault in job interview

10:59 AM CDT on Thursday, May 4, 2006
From Staff Reports

A Mansfield man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault of a child after allegedly talking about the assault during a job interview.

Stephen Roe Mansfield police spokesman Thad Penkala said Thursday that Stephen Taylor Roe, 19, applied for employment as a jailer with the city of Mansfield in December 2005. During the hiring process, he acknowledged he had engaged in sexual contact with at least one male under 18 but refused to reveal any victims names, so an investigation was launched.

He was not hired for the job, Mr. Penkala said.

In March, police responded to a reported sexual assault of a juvenile female in a Mansfield subdivision. During interviews with other individuals pertaining to that investigation, the identity of Mr. Roes alleged male victim was discovered, Mr. Penkala said.

Mr. Roe is not a suspect in the girls assault.

After interviewing the alleged victim, police arrested Mr. Roe on April 13. He was released after posting $75,000 bond. Mr. Penkala said two male juveniles also have been detained on sex-related offenses in connection with the investigation.

Mr. Penkala said the department confirmed Mr. Roe is an Eagle Scout, although he has been on inactive status since December. He said the Irving-based Boy Scouts of America has cooperated with the departments investigation, and at this time no accusations against Mr. Roe involve the Scouts.

Mr. Penkala said police believe additional victims may come forward. Anyone with information should call (817) 276-4700.
