I know this topic has been beat to death in the past, but I was wondering what is the latest, best software out there for ripping a DVD to VCD or DiVX. I got into doing this about a year ago but got tired of all the time it took and the audio sync problems I was having. Now I have a laptop (CD-ROM only) that I travel with quite a bit. I would like to encode some of my DVD's for viewing on a plane or at a hotel, etc etc..

Is there anything new and spectacular out there that has taken some of the headaches out of ripping a DVD, or is everyone still using the same old stuff?

Thanks,
JR..

IMHO, by far the easiest DVD 'backup' tool is DVD2SVCD. It pretty much automates the entire ripping/encoding process, even calculating bitrates. The only bad thing is that it uses Cinema Craft Encoder which is not free (the demo leaves a watermark on the corner of the screen). You also need a player that supports SVCD playback.

hmmm, cool. I'll check into that one. The watermark won't bother me unless it's just obnoxious. Can I download a free player that supports this SVCD format?
Thanks.

I use GordianKnot to encode DivX. Doom9's Guide.
