i love these guys. when im finally ready to build my system i figure at this rate they will pay me to take their DDR RAM? lol ;) well anyway, isnt it true that win98 and 2k dont recognize over 512mg of RAM. as in there is no performance increase?

Windows 98 & ME don't do as well with more memory. When I run Windows ME, my physical memory goes down the drain - quite quickly and then a reboot is required. Windows 2000 isn't completely free of memory leaks, but it does quite a bit better. I now have 768 MB of memory and Windows 2000 preserves most of it. I get nowhere near using up all of that physical memory ... unless I go out and work with multiple large images under Photoship and AutoCad.

ok, so for now, there is basically no need to go over 512mg for non strenuous activity.

It is true that WinME can't recognize more than 512MB of memory...it's a bug that Microsoft isn't going to bother to fix because it is generally assumed that if you have more memory than that, you're not going to be running an OS as crappy as WinME...

...as for Win98, I'm pretty sure it can recognize over 512MB, but I'm not completely sure...

Let's set the story straight, any OS based on the Win9x line does not like >512MB RAM. If I wasn't lazy tonight, I'd throw up the link on Microsoft's Technet web site. As is, I'll use those famous last words and say "trust me" on this one.

Great price on RAM though.....

I admit my 512MB RAM is way overkill for my Win ME rig but it was just so cheap, actually when I bought it I paid $89.24 per 256MB stick of Crucial RAM, ouch! It was still a great buy compared to last year's rates though.

By the title of the thread, I thought the price had suddenly gone down. Ordered 256MB Tuesday for this price, and got it today. Windows 98 has never ran so good. Definately get in on this deal.

When you go to the site check the make and model of your motherboard and it will give you the right memory for your system :)

And yes this is a great price for all of us computer-crazy-people :D

It KILLS me that 6 years ago I was buying 16Meg sticks of EDO for $800!

This is getting just too rediculous (though I like it!) It's a shame that Win9x seems to have a problem with over 512M memory installed, otherwise I would think everyone would have at least 768M at these prices... whether they need it or not!

On disappointing thing is the cost of 512M sticks. Although 512M for roughly $200 is truly CHEAP, you can get 3 256M chips for less. It would be too cool (braggin' rights only) to have a Win2k machine with 1.5GIG of RAM... but it would be a big waste too.

The last earthquake in Taiwan caused memory prices to go up about 20% overnight. Currently there is such an oversupply even that won't make a difference.

Joe,

Yep.....about '94 or 95 I paid ~$800 for (2) 8's....to add to my (2) 2's....giving me a total of 20mb for my 486. I had gotten tired of making boot disks for every game.

And, let's see...it was only what, < 2 years ago? when I was selling 32MB PNY sticks on eb*y for as much as $600 for a lot of (10) sticks. Wowsers.

I don't know if I would agree with that. Memory is almost a commodity now. If there was a big earthquake again I would bet prices would rise pretty darn fast... even if they shouldn't.
