All of the driving threads reminded inspired me to add my Monday driving story to the mix.
After the snow storm Sunday/Monday the road I take to work was a shiny, polished mass of ice. It was all pretty and reflective (in an unnerving way) in my headlights.
Anyway, there were about 7 car lengths between myself and the car in front of me. As I was coming up on a cross roads that had a stop sign (I did not) on a slight curve I saw this guy start spinning his tires, trying to get moving forward onto the road I was on. Since there was NO ONE behind me, I assumed he was planning ahead to make the most of his opportunity since it took a bit to get going this morning
Nope. He decided to try and wedge himself into the space between my car and the car in front of me (I mentioned there was no one behind me, right?)
The ice had other ideas and he slowly crept forward. For some reason he did not stop to avoid the situation, just pressed ahead and kept spinning his tires trying to get up to speed.
Unfortunately, as I tried to stop I started to slide a bit sidesways as I was in the middle of the turn. (Braking on a ice covered curve is always a good idea!)
Luckily we only collided at about a 5mph difference in speed - my driver's side door to his rear right bumper. We both pulled off to the side of the road to inspect the damage
I greeted him with a courteous "What the fvck is wrong with you?!" shouted to his location about 25 feet away
guy: "Why didn't you stop when you saw I was pulling out into the road?"
It went a bit downhill from there as I explained how the laws of physics works on materials with a low coefficient of friction - interlaced with obscenities for emphasis. I also....emphasized the fact that I had right of way.
The damage was negligible to my car. No dent and his paint rubbed off when I rubbed it with my thumb. I could not have cared less about his car. (Holy crap was it slippery. I slipped twice while inspecting the door)
Having no desire to wait 2 hours for the police or exchange paper work I told him I was just going to leave unless he wanted to contact the police.
He said no and went to get back in his car. Best thing was he fell down on the ice when he went to get back in :awe:
Cliffs:
- Bad weather monday
-Guy pulls out in front of me on icy road
-I can't stop in time, guy can't get up to speed in time
-Minor collision with no damage to my car
-Idiot driver slips and falls on the ice
