Another doped up Olympic Games

This was partially taken from an AP article: (look at one of the last paragraphs)

It was the first suspension of the Games, which for five days had been a celebration of sporting achievement and had officials hoping that the doping scandals that soured the Athens Games could be forgotten.

It also did not impress Martina Glagow who was pushed into third place in the 15km individual biathlon by Pyleva.

"I don't want the silver medal. If I didn't win it on the track it's useless," she told Reuters. "I'm shocked. I've known Pyleva for a long time and really didn't expect something like this."

World Anti-Doping Agency chief Dick Pound added to the sense that the battle against doping in Olympic sport was far from won, by saying he suspected that several cross-country skiers had taken banned substances.

"Frankly, we think we are dealing with doping," Pound, also an IOC member, said. "It is too much of a coincidence to have 12 athletes with hugely high Hb (hemoglobin) levels just before the Games."

what's the big deal with blood doping? they're just injecting more red blood cells right? Its not like they're taking roids.

From what I've heard, they do a transfusion when they're at their best, then inject it before the games. Unfair, if you ask me.

By having more RBC's your cells are able to deliver oxygen faster to your muscles. Obviously this gives you an unfair edge over those that aren't doping, especially in endurance sport.

I still think the old SNL skit with the Doping Olympics was one of the greatest ideas ever.

Ever competed in a competition where you wish you had a bit more endurance? Where you thought you could win if you could just keep up that blistering pace for a few more seconds, minutes?

That's what blood doping allows you to do.

Yeah. Blood doping is actually much more effective than steroids in boosting performance in endurance events.

In a way, I think it would be interesting to simply allow various forms of doping in the Olympics. We would certainly develop some interesting ways to enhance human endurance and performance. I'm sure the military would also be interested.
