Why the heck would you keep FOUR pit bulls in an apartment?

Mom, son attacked by pit bulls
1 dog killed, 3 removed from apartment

By SAEED AHMED
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A 7-year-old boy and his mother were attacked by four pit bulls in their northeast Atlanta apartment Wednesday. It was the second such attack in the metro area in two days.

The mother and son were bitten several times in the arms, legs and back, police said.

They were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition, and are expected to recover. Their names were not released.

Neighbors called officers to the Atlanta Overlook complex on Jackson Street about 4:45 p.m. after hearing screams coming from inside the third-floor unit.

"It was a traumatic sight," said Atlanta police Sgt. James Price. "The dogs had mauled the clothes off the mother. They were pulling on the little boy."

One of the officers fired two shots, killing one dog and injuring another. The other two ran to the porch, allowing police to pull the mother and son from the home.

The boy told police the dogs turned on them after the mother spanked one of the pit bulls for defecating on the carpet.

The residents may face charges of reckless endangerment, police said. Pets are not allowed on the premises, apartment management told police.

Neighbor Destiny Mack, 19, said when she heard the boy's screams, she ran to the balcony and could not believe what she saw.

"He was in the porch with one of the dogs at his legs. The woman was trying to get to her baby, but something was dragging her back," Mack said.

County animal control officials said they did not know whether the remaining three dogs would be put to sleep.

On Monday, a 52-year-old Norcross woman was mauled to death at her home on Singletree Place by one of her children's pit bulls. Seven dogs were removed from the home by animal control authorities.

Never knew an apartment complex would allow this.

also, never said how often they beat their dogs..might have gotten tired of it and lashed out.

Pit bulls aren't dangerous, it's the training.

Right, we discussed that ad nauseum in the other thread. I'm guessing this was just posted from a "damn, that's tragic" standpoint.

When will it stop? This kind of stuff is not only sad, it's stupid. Why is it stupid? Because it's preventable. These dogs are dangerous...plain and simple. IMO, they shouldn't be allowed as pets. How many deaths is it going to take before people wake up and stop defending these dogs as loving, generous animals. They are ticking time bombs. From what I've heard, they can be the most loving pet on Earth, but all it takes is something small to set them off.

I live on the ground floor of a 3 story apartment building. A few weeks ago I was coming home from work (around midnight) and opened up the security door to get inside the building. There was this pitbull sitting there, not doing nothing agressive or anything, just sitting there. A few seconds later the girl who lives in one of the third story apartments came walking down the steps. She let the dog out to take a piss, of course the dog ran down the steps to the door while she walked behind him. Now this dog wasn't acting in an agressive manner at all, but I know what they are capable of. (A friend of mine at my old job had to watch as the doctors amputated his son's leg after a pitbull attacked him 2 years ago.) My 2-year-old son lives with me. IMO, it not only was my right to call the manager's office, it was my duty. The safety of my son far, far outweighs anybody's right

to own a dangerous animal...especially in an apartment building with kids living there. The next day an animal correction's truck was parked outside my building...I haven't seen the dog since.

Attacks by these animals are stupid, but you know what's pathetic? People defending them.

At least these dogs are in a confined space. We have a pack of pit bulls over here in Chicago that are mauling people in a forest preserve.

Why does anyone engage in any of the seemingly infinite number of very stupid things today? Stupidity, I would guess.

My sister has three pitbulls now, but they are all very well tempered and dispositioned. Big babies that want to lay in your lap @ 55lbs each and are content to lick you to death.

But I agree that the masses should not have free and unfettered access to the pitbull and a few other breeds. The pitbull is a working dog, not a domesticated "pet", nor more than the horse or oxen are domesticated "pets". I DO believe they should be available to those who are willing to put forth the effort required to get a permit, however, and prove they have adequate facilities to house the animal, secure it from getting loose and running around the neighborhood, among a few other requisites for owning an animal which demands more diligence and responsibility than the average breed of dog.
