Viva la Canon S1 IS!

I have it and love it. It has a killer 10x optical zoom, and very nice video mode. Currently $325 at buydig.com. That would leave $75 for AA batteries, CF card, and case.

Search "S1" and you'll find links to some nice reviews.

For a good P&S, I would recommend the sony DSC-W1. I bought mine about 6 months ago and I am very happy with it for all around usefullness.

Don't bother with a W1.

The DSC-V1 walks all over any Canon within $100.00 of that price point, let alone at the $300 range.

PowerShot S1
  • Poor low light focusing; no AF-assist lamp!
  • Electronic viewfinder difficult to see in dim light
  • Images slightly noisy; above average purple fringing as well

Powershot S1 is very nice, although take a look at the new Panasonic Lumix with the 10x lens. That is imo the best consumer grade camera out right now. Powershot A series is a good bet while also being very cheap (probably the best deal)

I 2nd this choice. Awesome zoom, takes the AA's and CF, which are both inexpensive accesories.

I'm under a similar set of cirumstances. I'm looking for a camera that has an actual detachable lense style design (rather than a rectangular pocket cam) for no more than $350ish. Suggestions?
