Another day, another crash

You guys have been great to me, so it should be no surprise this is where I turn when stumped. 🙂

My computer was running just fine. Then I plugged in a USB device and there was a jolting sound from the fans, and it was dead. All fans running, but no action. Powered down to reboot, won't boot. All the lights and fans come up but no POST. Checked to make sure everything was seated properly, but it still won't power up.

How on earth could plugging in a USB device fry this thing, and any ideas what it could be? It appears to start up, with the fans coming on and drive spinning up. But it never comes to life.

TIA

No beeps on start up. Chipset has no fan. I will try removing the CMOS for a few minutes and see what that does.
