"My big daughter, she sometimes wants to try" to drive, said the teenagers' mother, Tooba Mohammad, this morning after wiping away tears at the doorway of the family's modest duplex in the north Montreal borough of Saint-Leonard.

Still, she said she was unsure of what happened.

Her daughter Zainab, 19, Sahab, 17, and Geeti, 13, along with 50-year-old Rona Amir Mohammed were found Tuesday morning inside a black Nissan Altima that had plunged into the canal.
......
Police have remarked on how strange the accident was, since the car would have had to navigate numerous obstacles to end up in the canal. They have been treating the case as suspect.

The mother's aunt, Zarmina Fazel, told the Star: "It would go around fences, I don't know. I'm in shock."

She went on, "Midnight, practice (driving) by the water is not normal, no? I cannot understand. Okay, you . . . practice in parking lot or big place."

Well, someone did quite a number. If it is indeed true that they were practicing driving without even a learner's permit, then I just have no words...

Wow, that's disturbing.

lol no white people in Canada?? Well, Montreal is a multicultural city but to question there being any white people there is pretty retarded.

well she passed the obstacle course portion of the test, but not the brake portion. Better luck next time!

But seriously, from the sound of it she did not try very hard. If there was obsticles I'd try to hit those indirectly to slow down instead of heading straight for open water. Hitting a large brick or metal building/object sideways properly can be done safely to slow down a vehicle. (well, as safe as an accident can get lol)

Minor point - it was actually a Sentra, not an Altima.

On a tangent, I have heard of Chinese families in Vancouver where one family member obtains a license and allows the other unlicensed family members to drive. Sounds like in this case, the eldest girl took the car without permission though.

Ending up in the canal is a major WTF though, I agree.

Women drivers...

j/k ;)

Bump for new details: http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/...sition-of-bodies-in-canal-baffled-divers?bn=1

KINGSTON—The mother of three drowned sisters does not wish to see their lifeless bodies, can’t bear it.

Tooba Mohammad Yahya asked to be excused from that horror.

But she is charged with murdering them. So is her husband. So is their son.

Together, they stand accused of submerging those teenage girls, and a fourth victim, in eight feet of water at the Kingston Mills locks on the Rideau Canal, sunk inside the family’s Nissan Sentra in what the prosecution has described as an honour killing staged to look like an accident.

...

The driver’s side window on the vehicle was wide open. Even a non-swimmer, if conscious, would surely have attempted an escape and clambered to the car’s roof, which was only some three feet below the surface of the water, leaning against the lock’s northern-most gate. They could have stood and gasped for air and hollered for help. There were boaters nearby, spending the night on their vessels — a sailboat and a houseboat waiting to proceed through the locks from the Cataraqui River, come morning. But the occupants of the Nissan apparently never tried to escape.

They were Zainab Shafia, 19; Sahar Shafia, 17; Geeti Shafia, 13; and Rona Amir Mohammad, 50, first wife of their father in a polygamous Afghan marriage, routinely introduced to outsiders as the sisters’ aunt.

This whole story gets even weirder. How could this be an honor killing which was staged? Somebody explain please.

Didn't realize this was an old thread when I was reading the OP. I immediately thought it sounded staged. 3 people in a car under water and nobody tries to escape? Sure, sounds plausible.

what the hell happened here..

girls want to be western, dad + brother decided enough is enough, kill the girls and make it look like auto accident.

Allegedly of course. All have to be proven in court first.
