As if Oracle’s, Microsoft’s, and Apple’s [1] [2] suits weren’t giving Android enough headache, today, Gemalto, an Amsterdam-based digital security company, added some fuel to the flames by filing a patent infringement suit against Google and its partners HTC, Samsung, and Motorola. The suit claimed that Android and the Dalvik operating environment incorporated Gemalto’s patented Java Card technology without the company’s permission.

Android's been out and about in real products for more than 2 years now, and had its source code available for longer than that. If you're just getting around to filing a lawsuit for patent infringement, it really seems like they're just out to make money on someone else's work.

Maybe Google should do a radical redesign of Android in a future release, using all open source software in it to prevent these Mexican standoff lawsuits.
