Another college question: Can an academic advisor excuse you from some basic requirement classes?

Can they? If you're an upperclassmen, can your academic advisor excuse you from taking some real basic classes? Maybe if you prove that you're proficient, in a class like "Business Writing", for example?

Down here ut UF you can either AP out of a class in high school (which also gives you credit for that class without taking it), or you can take a placement test for certain types of classes that puts you in a higher level class (chem, math, etc.)

the dept head can but not sure if they will for that reason...they can for something like not being able to get into a required class your last semester or something...

Mine did. I ditched accounting and took a high level elective that actually pertained to something computer science related.

EVERY school has processes for waiving classes. Your academic advisor probably can't waive them by himself, but should be able to help you through the school's process.

One example is that i need to take some sort "Ethnic Diversity"/"International Studies" course. I'm Korean, so can't I waive that class when I get near my graduation date?

You think you can argue "I'm Korean so I shouldn't have to take an ethnic diversity class?"
I think that's a bit lame, but good luck.

But be prepared to not have a degree if it backfires. 😀

Where I went to school, your advisor couldn't do much. I know that you could attempt to forgo any class by way of "Credit By Examination." Basically you pay a nominal a fee, take an exam, if you get a high enough score, you get exempted and credited. At my school, only the Dept. of Records could exempt you from classes. Generally, nobody got excused from anything without at least testing out.

I hope there's some way to avoid those lower classes - I'm in my senior year, an English major, gotten A's in almost all my upper division classes, and they want me to go back and take "Introduction to Reading". ah heck them! It means I have to take 24 units this quarter, unless they'll write it off for me.

there's ways around just about any old rule. usually people just don't care, are too lazy, or just don't see why they should make an exception for you.
