Penske is good buddies with American Axle CEO Dick Dauch. He saw his buddy make a ton of money buying a GM cast off in 1994. He'll do the same.

This is the beginning of the Walmartization of the car business. Penske can source cars from any manufacturer, and play them against each other to squeeze the lowest price.

It's a liiiiiittle bit tougher to swap out one auto manufacturer for another than it is toilet paper manufacturer.

more probable outcome will be prolly penske ends up with GM springhill plant to produce there own vehicles, prolly initially licenesed GM platforms.

man, you should stay out of car discussions...

Saturn has ALWAYS been a GM brand... it was originally launched to compete with the Japanese manufacturers, with a fixed price, etc...

It started as a stand-alone subsidiary, look back to January 8th 1985.

Don't even try to tell me what I can't participate in boy.

Edit: Here is a good read for you to

it started as a stand along subsidiary created from within gm in order to take on the japanese... it was always a gm brand, and the problems that were brought over to Saturn were because it was always a GM brand... now, also note that the brand may have come about in 1985, but its first car did not launch until 1991... The Saturn brand would have been pioneers in many fields, in fact the Vue was one of the first vehicles created under the brand, but was pushed back, and thus we had japanese define the cute ute segment, and not Saturn... you also had 6 years between concept and production, which was not quick enough to curb the japanese because now GM's Saturn brand was behind the curve from the beginning....

When Saturn first started out they were 'a different kind of car company' and under GM they simply became an unknown. Other than the recent commercials when was the last time you saw a Saturn ad? Also, what happened to their size and affordability? They went away from building small economical cars to bigger less efficient cars. I own an Astra (built by Opel in Belgium) and it's a great car but the dealer said they aren't moving. No wonder, it's not like I've ever seen an Astra in an ad. I never even heard of it until I did research on budget hatchbacks.

As far as the future of Saturn, with the Astra gone they have no budget or economical cars in their lineup. The cheapest Saturn is the Aura at $23,500 MSRP in base form. Even with rebates and incentives that car isn't going to leave the lot at under $20K and it's a base model. Throw in a few options, tax, destination fee, dealer fee and you're easily back in the $23K - $24K range. I don't consider that cheap.

I hope Penske is able to make Saturn work. If he doesn't I'll probably have a real hard time getting warranty work done on my car. :(

I know... the Astra was the only (top-to-bottom) domestic econo-car I had the least bit interest in buying... then they kill it. Back to Honda, Toyota, or Mazda.

And domestic car makers wonder why they're in so much trouble.
