ANOTHER car thread.. this is scary!!

OMG!! I hear this horrible noise when I reverse. It's gotten alot worse than it was before.

When I reverse, after going about 2 or 3 feet, I hear this NASTY grinding/bumping noise coming from the back of the car. It sounds like I scrape the underside of my car on a boulder every time. What could this possibly be???

FYI, my rear suspension also clatters when I go over bumps. MaDd InDIan said it is probably the bushings. I assume these things are somehow related, but I don't know how worn bushings could cause that grinding.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm taking the car to a mechanic tomorrow for an alignment so I'll have that checked out too.

You know there's a joke among physicians regarding pain where the patient goes "It hurts when I do this" So the doc goes" Then don't do that"

You hear a horrible noise in reverse? then don't do that! Always remember 3 lefts = a right, and doing a 180 going forward is going backward.

Check out the plastic shields around the wheels. If one of them is loose, it might be getting caught on the tire and scraping. Of course it could also be part of your exhaust.

Only in reverse?

I would check the exhaust etc, but it's too dark now. I'll look tomorrow. I don't think the wheel well plastic is coming off.

Hmm, its more than the bushings if your getting a grinding noise, that is usually transmission related; however S41 240SXs are not know for having bad reverse on their tranny. A few things that you could check:
- is there anything rubbing against the wheels and/or suspension components?
- are u getting a gridning noise only when you press/release the clutch? I had a slight grinding noise when I pressed the clutch and it was due to the throw-out bearing. The car had around 135k km at the time.

it would be infinitely easier if you stood outisde of the car while someone else drove it in reverse. Only in reverse sounds like a transmission problem, in all honesty. Are you sure the noise doesnt appear at highway speeds?

The noise is only in reverse, and I believe it happens when I'm rolling, independent from clutch... I think.. I'll go check right now.

Tomorrow during the day, check the underside of the car and look for anything stuck to the wheel wells or suspension pieces. Also check to see if the trim underneat the wheel wells is loose and rubbing against the tires.

If its not those, take it to a mechanic man! You don't want a mechanical grinding noise going on for too long!

I don't think brake pads on discs would make that noise. It sounds like the edge of a metal plate scraping on a rough, hard surface... I suppose it could be tire treads or something.

Check to see if the brake pad's clip broke and it is now dragging against either the rotor or the backing plate

I've heard some awful noises come from brakes...esp. when the pads have crystallized.

And...is this 4-wheel disc or rear drum?

4 wheel disc.

I had a simliar Problem with my muffler. It would actually rotate some times scraping on the ground. Not to nice sounding but I finally got rid of the car.

Check it out just in case.
