The SX10-IS has a very easy to use super macro setting (hold down the macro button for 4 seconds.)
This was taken as an extreme close up of the top of a barrel cactus by my driveway. Distance from lens to subject was about 4 inches.

Cacti

This is better than I have been able to do with my EOS 5D and the 50mm, f/1.4 lens.

I agree that the extreme close up does not look much like a macro - never said it was. That was only the mode setting. As for extension tubes - agree - but that is not always usefule when you are on the move shooting at targets of opportunity. Those have to be planned to some extent. Also, since the SX10 cannot use extension tubes, thast would be like comparing apples to oranges, i.e., the test has to be camera + lens - nothing else added.

Anyway - to continue the experiment, this is the same subject, same angle, but using the max telephoto (560mm) with ordinary macro mode setting.

You were the first one to compare the SX10 to the 50/5D. Also, using tubes doesn't really take much dedication or planning, if I need to shoot something at infinity focal length I just switch off the camera and pop off the tube. Takes about 10 seconds at most.

Right! But, when one is traveling abroad and on the move, extension tubes are not usually on hand. :)

Since the SX10 does not have interchangeable lenses, then the comparision to an extension tube setup is apple to oranges. This camera w/lens to camera with lens.

Here's a different example of an extreme closeup with the SX10. A silver coin in a plastic mint case. The odd thing is that part of the camera lens and my fingers are reflected in the coin's shiny surface. Point is - the SX10 has a very good closeup capability.

I will check on those adapters. Sounds interesting.

How are you liking the SX10? I was waiting for the successor to the S5IS to come out. But I have heard that it's low light picture taking is actually worse than the S5. Is that true?

I can only compare it to the S3 IS, which was OK. The more I use the SX10-IS, the more I like it. For a small, lkight weight ultra zoom on long overseas trips, it will replace my Nikon P80 (I hate the Nikon layered menu system!()

I'll try a low light shot for you. OK - here's a shot illuminated only by a single,50w flouresecent twist bulb. The setting was "P", and the viewfinder flashed a red icon telling me to raise the flash - which I did not do.

Junk

The subject is just junk on my printer table. :)

And here is a lwer light one taken in our guest bedroom - illumination one window with blinds partially closed. EXIF data show exposure was 1/8th of a second (hand held!); at f/2.8 and ISO 400. (P Mode.)

And, here is essentially the same picture taken with the S3 IS for comparison.

This past weekend was really good for trying the SX10 on several days of low light work at max telephoto range using max ISO of 1600. Yeah - there is noise, but it is of no conseqauence for the puspose. I took several hundred shots of musicians at the Arizona Classic Jazz Festival in CHandler, AZ. One of the featurted bands was Barbary Coast from Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN. One of their stars was a blind gentleman, Dick Ramberg, who played piano and clarinet. Watching him was inspirational. Anyway, these photos will go on a video CD. They are not for enlarging or printing. :) Here is Dick Ramberg doing a clarinet solo. Lights were all very low except for some stage lights, which also were somewhat low. The viewfinder said "Raise the Flash" - but at a couple of hundred feet, that would do no good. The result is quite useful:
