I'm sure nobody EVER gets sick of these "what do I buy" threads, so I will happily operate under that assumption.

Situation:
Gamer needs a new computer 'cause he can't play the new stuff coming. old rig is very old.

Assets:
has a full operating system disk
doesn't care much about sound/music quality
can get by on old hard drive if it means a better component somewhere else.
mouse, keyboard, blah blah
AND has a Magnavox 32" LCD HDTV that he would love to be able to play comp. games on.

Budget ~800-1000$ (may be convinced to spend a tad more if it means big returns)

Tech level: barely above novice. built last rig around 4 years ago. had no problems, but is not up on all the new stuff. would take a very clear cut guide on OCing to get him to come out from under the bed.

I hoped this is the right thread since gaming rigs tend to be built around the video card.

shamelessly gratuitous bump :)

any recommendations would be appreciated, even if its just one component that fits the general budget outline

Edited:

Big returns if you go for this 8800GTS over the X1950XT, will cost $1191.

If you can get by with your old hard drive you may want to drop the hard drive i mention and go for a E6400 over the E6300, the extra multiplier would help alot for a higher overclock.
