If I replace it with my own, they say I will not get a static ip. Is this a big deal? I did internet search but the subject is above me. Thanks.

I really do need to update my avatar lol - but if you haven't already sent me a msg BuildingAcomputer let me answer your question. Truth is if you have a customer owned modem you can't get a static IP. There are technical reasons behind it that unfortunately cannot be easily worked around. But tell me....why do you think you need static IP? With a good modem and router (that you never turn off) your IP will almost never change. I have kept the same IP for an extremely long time....well over a year.
