or should i call it a Trainstorm instead of Brainstorm?

You know, i should really use my time at work coming up with cool ideas for making my company's software better, but instead i sit around coming up with better asslaminating ideas all day. anywho...

What if we got together a few guys who know a language pretty well, and get them to translate the whole site into that language, and after a while we could even set up teams for each language we expand to. These people would then be responsible for translating each AnandTech Article when it comes out to be put on the translated sites.

Of course we would have to get Anand's permission, but if you think about it, im sure he'd be glad to have his site in other languages, look at the traffic it would generate, the banner hits would go thru the roof, as would Anand's income. but what im getting at here is with the huge amount of new visitors, we could do some astronomical assimilating.

We would have to decide which language we want to tackle first, on these two factors:
1. A language we have a good number of people who are wiling to translate (maybe the increases traffic would help compensate these guys, or heck we could hire proffesional translators with the money)
2. A language that has a lot of internet usage

Then of course we would have to throw this idea at Anand, and see what comes of it.
 
well it might make sense to use one of the official languages Distributed.net is in:

English | Français | Nederlands | Japanese | Norsk | Deutsch | Swedish
 
c'mon guys, we all know those dont really work, especially if you want to run a proffesional looking website, even if they get all the translations right, the grammar is all wrong.
 
Yes, babelfish is great ! I toujours understand ce what is écrit with ce translator. 😉
 
Translating all of the Anandtech site (and keeping up with the daily updates) into multiple languages is a BIG job, Train.

However, it might help TeamAnandtech if we were to translate the web pages at teamanandtech.com into several different languages. I would think that, other than for stats, those pages are mostly static (faqs, how to join the team, the tutorial, etc.). Plus, it might open the concept of distributed computing to more individuals.

As an example, the main GIMPS (Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search) page is translated into several different languages.

Like the "Trainstorms!"
 
I think it is a great idea, but unfortunate my Japanese isn't what it used to be 😛
I can look at the characters, but understanding it is a bit rusty. 😀

Seriously, it is an idea to be considered.
Only one proposition, let's start with the teams' website. It will be easier and the team will benefit more in the short run.
Then we can try it out and see how much work is involved. From experience, I can tell translations take much more time than one expects.

I can put some time into the translation to Dutch (or Nederlands), but not in the short term. Let's say it is my intention and promise to TA for the new year.😛😛

Ya, converting Anandtech right off the bat isn't fessable. It would take a while just to update recent articles; and as much work keeping up. If you really want to translate something, definately translate some of TA.com's pages first.:Q
 
A few months ago, when the idea of the TA site was introduced, I offered to translate it into Portuguese ( my main language ), and would serve some several millions people like spanish speaking oriented country's ( south america ), Brasil, some african and some Asian as well....

There are a few hundred doing work for d.net in PT, maybe i can call more to the team if they get some idea in PT...

I have the time to do that if the team feels it is a incremental asset to the "cause"
 
It's a good idea, as long as someone at least checks the automatic translations. I just got this news quip from a German web site translated to english on Teletranslator:

Babelfish got the court right, but didn't capitalize it or call it the Supreme Court. There's also Intertran. It translates more languages, like Dutch, but I only use it if I can use nothing else because apparently it doesn't look at word context at all. Edit: funny story. I once used Intertran on the automatic insult page (I don't remember the address, but you know), and posted it in a DPC thread (here). They told me it didn't make any sense at all.

Even better if someone who knows what they're doing can translate manually. Also, we might translate some of the static pages manually, and link to the rest of the pages through a translator like Teletranslator or Babelfish.
 
Train - it's a great idea. 🙂 It is (as has been said) well worth doing for the TA pages.

The languages that really need looking after are simply those that we have translators for.

(I used to speak a little geek but now I'm hoplessly out of date. Yes geek Dkappos, not Greek)😉

One of the great things about being part of The Feds and TA is that we hail from across the planet. It's hard enough trying to explain RC5 to a native English speaker let alone to somebody who has English as a second or third language! Let's do it. 🙂
 
I speak Spanish quite well (not quite fluent, but fairly close) and I would be willing to do a little bit of translating, such as the TeamAnanadtech page, but don't think I want to tackle the mountain of translating the Anandtech page itself.. 🙂
 
Unfortunately, I failed Spanish 101 not once, but TWICE! Still, I remember my abc's, the numbers, and many basic words.. still, I'd be happy to help in any way I can, if I can.

FWIW, I think that this is an excellent idea Train!

Until your boss starts sharing that opinion I'd guess you're OK.
 
It sounds like a good idea. If we could tap into some of the languages that don't already have a good DC team then we could possibly gain alot of members.🙂
 
I think, Spanish and Portuguese are the two most important languages in which we need to translate our pages. These languages have a large audience, that is not especially targeted for DC projects, at least as far as I know.

Spanish is, next to English and Chinese, one of the most speaking languages in the world. And Portuguese is spoken by a large part of the population of South-America.

As said, I'm willing to make the tranlation to Dutch, but I don't know if this is going to pay off, since the DPC are targeting that same audience.
It would be appreciated if someone can give his/her opinion about that.

If you people are not in a BIG hurry I offer a German translation. 😀 <kidding> For some beers and chicks in a hot tub of course. 😉 </kiddding>
 
I'm not fluent in any foreign language nor do I drink, but for babes in a hot tub I'd gladly learn a second language and translate some pages.😉J/K
