Another BH7 Help Needed

Ok, Im building a new system for my bro-in-law's sister which uses the ff:

Abit's BH-7 with P4@2.66Mhz (not overclocked)
Memory - Twinmos PC3200 512Mb
Video Card - GeForce3 & MX400
HD - 100GB WD1000BB
CD-RW - Norcent 52x24x52
standard keyboard and mouse
Power Supply - RHYCON rated at 400W came with the case.

When I turn the system on the CPU fans turn on and hard drive spins up. There is NO video (monitor is on standby), no error beeps, and noticed that the keyboard doesn't have any light when I press the Scroll lock, numlock and caps lock keys. :|

I already switched 2 different video cards, switched memory modules, cleared the CMOS, reseat everything and tried disconnected everything except keyboard&mouse, video card and monitor but still no video and nothing! 🙁

BTW, there is a red and yellow light beside the ATX power supply connector that turns on.

I don't have a spare CPU and Power supply to try it out. Can someone help me out, any suggestions beside replacing the power supply?

Have you tried removing the mobo out of the case, and just using the cpu/heatsink, one stick of memory, and video card? The board may be touching something in the case, causing your no boot condition. Also, double check your cables to the floppy and hardrive. One could be on backwards. I leave the hardrive by itself on it's own ide port, and use the other one for and cd- drives. I also always use master-slave jumper settings, instead of cable select.

That's actually a good sign I think. My working BH7 also has those lights on.

Its outside the case on a bench set-up with a non cunductive material on the bottom. All i have now that is attached to the motherboard is a CPU w/ sink, a video card, 1 stick of memory and a speaker to hear the beep codes BUT still nothing.

The problem is either the mobo or the CPU. Its hard to tell Googlegear which to RMA. Any other suggestions?

I'd be interested to hear about any solutions too. I have a very similar problem with a system I helping a friend with: the BH7 powers on (the green and red LEDS light up), the fans turn, but it shuts down after a few seconds and the red LED goes off. It does that whether it's in the case or not, so it's not a case short.

You need a 3 pin RPM monitoring fan on the CPU fan header to boot the board. Some fans do not put out enough RPM to boot the board. You can then go into the BIOS and change the setting...

I had a similar problem with my IT7 Max2... then this old man😛 showed me the way... 🙂😀 And try to avoid using a variable speed fan. They tend to be too slow during initial boot up...

Its a fail safe design, they want to make sure that the CPU fan is running. On my case, I was using the retail H/S fan which was plugged directly to the CPU fan header. I don't have any video at all and no lights on the keyboard. I already RMA'd the board and CPU, I don't have any extra CPU to test the board or any board to test the CPU (bummer) . 😱

I did request a test report from googlegear to know what went wrong. I'll post the update as soon as I get it.

Can you let me know if this problem has been fixed. I have the same problem with my board. I am trying to find the fix I'd really like to fix mine before I have to send it back to NewEgg.

Thanks

Mike, better get an RMA on your board, I talked to googlegear customer service and they said that it takes about a week and a half to get the result and replacement. Such a pain in waiting for the replacement.

I just recieved a replacement, its the mobo alright not the CPU. Theres no reason/analysis why it failed, just a note saying that thiers a problem with the mobo and its being replaced. Oh well, at least they tested the new mobo if it runs ok.

Cheers!

You don't need to have a fan that monitors the rpms...mine is hooked straight to the power suppply. Did you plug in the four pin 12V connector? And yes the two lights are suppose to be on.

I finally got mine back from New Egg and everything works fine now. They had to replace the motherboard for me.

Thanks for all your help.
