This is actually a repost from one I did earlier in the Video forum. I'm hoping for more response out of this forum since it is generally larger. Thanks. Oh ya, don't turn this into a "blah blah sux, blah blah sux" arguement. Be respectable in ur opinions please.

I was talking to my friend who just bought a geforce3 ti500, and I thinking of asking him, "Why not just by the Radeon 8500 and save a few bucks..." but he beat me too and said the drivers were too buggy, which justified (to himself at least) himself spending more dough for the geforce3 ti500. Now assuming I've been under a rock all this time, but are the drivers still that much of an issue now a days? Now he bought his for $270 I think, which I know can be found cheaper around SOMEWHERE considering the GeForce4 ti4400 can be found for $250+, but I know the Radeons are running mid-low hundreds right? So are the driver bugs that bad? And are they worth spending the extra 100 bucks for??

They're certainly both nice boards, the ATI 8500 drivers are fine, especially the new 6043 set. For $160 (or less), I'd say the twin head Retail Radeon 8500 is hard to beat, features/performance are excellent.

The two best vid cards performance/price ratio are the GF3 Ti200 and the Radeon 8500. I heard that the Ti4200 should be a good value, but I am waiting for the benches on that one.

never had 1 lockup with my radeon 8500 w/ my Th7-II

it did act a little quirky with my 8kha+ but i think that had to do more with ACPI problems than the vid card or mobo

I love both ATI and Nvidia. I have had several cards from both companies and think that both cards are equal on the gaming front. It all depends what "other" things you want to do, like DVD playback, OC ability, 2d quality (if thats important to you). Price is also a big issue and in that respect, the Radeon has the Nvidia beat. last I saw, you could get the 8500 retail for like 130 with rebates and such. I just missed out on that by a week and bought a GF3 Ti200. I love the card but had I known I could have gotten the 8500 for 130 I would have been all over that like stink on poop! :)

I only get 45fps or so (1152x864 with 2x FSAA) with my Radeon 7500 in DoD. To fix this, type "ati_npatch 0" in the console as it is on be default. Also, edit the config.cfg file in CS or DoD to get more than 72fps (I changed the limit from 72.0 to 99.0).

No, that's " ati_npatch 0 " without quotes. To keep it off for good, dig into your config.cfg or autoexec.cfg in your halflife or cstrike directory and change the ati_npatch statement there.

I have had a Radeon 8500LE since December. Ran Serious Sam, Half-Life, Max Payne, Medal of Honor, RtCW, Renegade, Emperor: Battle for Dune, Alice and many other games with zero issues. Ran into a bit of stuttering in Deus Ex (fixed by shutting off trilinear), and some people down at Rage3D are grumbling about problems with Tribes 2 and Unreal. As for drivers, we've seen seven driver releases (official, official beta, third party and leaked) in the past three months. In Canada, you can buy two Radeon 8500s for the cost of one Ti4600.

Am I having half the fun of GF4 users? I doubt it.

It all comes down to whether it's worth the extra money to get a GeF3 Ti500 over a Radeon 8500. You'll spend about $80-90 more for the Ti500.

Most of the people that opt for the Ti500 do so because they want the absolute best compatibility and reliability. And the Ti500 does clearly have that advantage over the 8500, but IMO it's not to the point where'd you should spend the extra $80-90.

It's a complicated matter, but IMHO the Radeon 8500 is a better value right now solely because of it's price. If the Ti500 and 8500 were within $20 or less of each other, then I'd pick up the Ti500 in a heartbeat. 2D is negligible unless you're the 1% of the population that has a 1600x1200 resolution on your 19" or 21" monitor, and DVD-playback is in the same category (for me at least).

Anyone wish to comment on ATi's latest official 6014 drivers? Those are the newest on their web site.

re: UT. Have'nt checked framerates, but my R8500 seems plenty quick and
stble with the official drivers - 9009 with 98se. Did encounter freezes with
the betas, which is why I'm using the official ones!

I have a Radeon 64 VIVO and don't have any problems with the drivers. Do I have GF4 envy? Sure, but it's not enough to make me spend $400. If I were to buy something today, it would probably be the Radeon 7500 or 8500 AIW. Video in is very important to me, and the GeForce cards just don't have it.

BTW, I played Max Payne on this card just fine.
