Would I be better off with a commercial product if I did not mind the cost? My wife managed to fubar a third install in a year by getting some virus. . .

I was thinking about buying a good package. Are there any that it is ok to install one copy on two computers (laptop and desktop)?

If money wasn't a factor what should I get?

I've heard NOD32 is good, and there are good OEM deals on Norton products all the time. McCaffee also comest to mind....

I like simple and unobtrusive programs if that helps :)

AVG or NOD32 are about as good as it gets (if there is such a thing as a good virus program..)

Norton or McAfee are just plain bloatware.

Personally, AVG (freeware version) does the job and does it very well
using a minimum of system resources.

I get Norton Corporate for free and I don't find it bloated at all.

Of course, nobody ever includes it in their tests.

Id say Panda Platinum

I was using Panda Titanium 2004(with todays AV update) until about 20 minutes ago,did a full scan with Panda then changed my AV software to AVAST Professional due to my subscription expiring very soon and wanted to try something new,so far it has found 4 viruses that Panda missed with todays update,I was impressed with Panda, but right now I`m even more impressed with Avast Pro,I love the siren going off and warning you about a virus detected in a female voice lol, something out of Star Trek.

:)

What about installing on multiple computers - noone commented on that. If I buy one I'd like to install it on my wife's desktop and my laptop . . .

If you buy Norton Antivirus Professional (the slightly more expensive one, although still availible for free after rebate sometimes) you get licences for two computers.

It would be nice if there was a single AV utility that detected all viruses and trojans. I'm sure that if you loaded Kapersky it would find items that Avast has missed.....and if you loaded McAfee it would also detect something.

It's kind of like running multiple Spyware removal tools to clean up your computer. Run AdAware, then run Spybot to clean up what AdAware missed, and finally run Spysweeper to remove the rest of the garbage that Spybot missed.

;)

John that`s true, however it`s always nice to try a new anti-virus software, especially when it finds new things ;),I also like the skins you can download for Avast Pro,link to skins(Matrix one is cool). ,the tweaking options in Avast Pro are huge.

Btw I also have the AV software built-in my VCOM SystemSuite V5 as backup ,don`t get me started on my spyware protection(Ad-aware,Spybot,Spywareblaster,Spykiller to name a few ;) ).

In the end it`s what you are happy with that counts, but I`m that kind of guy that likes to try new things now and then, especially where AV is concerned. The reason I like Avast Pro at the moment is the tweaking/skins/features etc.

I forgot to meantion that Avast give you a 60 day free trial with Avast Pro.

Dr. Web is a pretty nice AV program.

Im wondering, could I install a few AV programs onto a CD or USB Thumb Drive and run them off there?

I dont fancy all the bloatware, the hassle associated with conflicting programs but I do like the idea of being able to scan with a few programs without much hassle.
