Pilots are pretty unlikely to be searched on the way in. They usually know the rules, have no criminality, and will leave. I imagine it's similar in the USA.
Knowingly possessing a loaded prohibited (yes, short barreled handguns are prohibited here) handgun, especially in an airport, is a big deal here.
