I'm wondering if the case 'grating' typically covering fans serves a functional purpose other than protecting fingers.
Is this machined hole-punching better than just a large hole? also wondering how the slightly offset (raised) metal affects airflow.
anyone understand the physics of airflow?

I hate physics, but I generally cut the factory "grating/grill" out on my cases. In my opinion, it allows for more airflow and quieter airflow, but of course that's just my opinion and i've been known to be wrong occasionally ;)

Ditto for my cases, I remove that factory pre-cut grill. Then replace it with some kind of filter. If I'm stupid enough to stick my finger in the turning fan then I shouldn't be going inside a computer. IMO that's all those grills are there for, to prevent injury to someone who sticks their finger in the turning fan.
