Another AGP newb needs advice...

Well, I never really considered myself a newb because I was generally able to figure out my comp issues on my own. However, with the coming of Vista I have come to the realization that I have lost touch with nerdom after building my current rig (3.5 yrs old).

Besides being cheap, I am certainly happy with my system and truly believe I can squeeze a couple more years out of it before succumbing to the PCI-E and dual core onslaught. However, I would like to upgrade to vista now and need advice from fellow ATers.

Current box is in sig. I am considering putting in ~300 bucks to buy 1 gig of ram and a 7800gs range agp card. Will this run vista and aero without any problems? Are my 300 bucks better saved towards a wholly new system? Am I indeed a newb for deluding myself into thinking this rig will last a few more years? I play the occasional FPS and do some photoshop work. What is most important is being able to smoothly run all features of vista.

UPDATE: Are there any rumors about agp cards supporting dx10 floating around? Anyone think a manufacturer will go this route at all?

Thanks in Advance

I don't see any reason to upgrade to Vista at all yet, even though I get Ultimate free through work. But if you have the bleeding edge fever, go for it.

1.5 GB and a 7800GS should run it well, and the 7800GS is several times as fast as your 5900 for games. Though Vista will cripple gaming on nv cards for now: Ars Technica - rabble rabble rabble!

If you are using Photoshop, another gig of ram will probably do wonders.

Otherwise, if it does what you want it to do, I wouldn't bother with any other upgrades, including Vista.

Will your printer, scanner, camera, etc. work with Vista? SB card lose games functions?

A lot to consider.
