Here's the scoop

linky

First up, the 3000+ is a Clawhammer core running at 1.8GHz with 1MB cache. Who would have thought AMD would have taken such a radical step?

The more interesting bit is the pricing. The current Athlon64 3200+ can be found for about $400 -- give or take a few. This new chip will be a little more than half that when it debuts, most likely on December 15, but that could still change by a few days. Look for the price to be less than $225 once the newness factor wears off. While this release is probably too late to affect Christmas sales much, it bodes well for 64 bit chip pricing in the new year.

So deal with it. You paid twice as much for 10% more speed.

Why the condescending attitude? All I said was that I'd sell my Athlon 64 3200+ if these specs were true? It's not like I was complaining about anything so that comment is pretty unwarranted.

The reason why I said price mistake is b/c NewEgg lists the CPU speed as 2.0GHz which would make it essentially the same as a 3200+ They must have the CPU speed wrong I guess.

I'm falling asleep and was being flipant?

Plus nothing like a little fire to keep a thread goin....

It's all good, but unless you sold your 3200 a day ago I think you are too late....

I will be buying one of these in about 2 weeks unless the reviews are crappy which is what Im waiting for, and actual comparison between this and other processors. That said this chip could own for AMD if the reviews are half way decent.

I wonder when well get a "budget" AMD CPU shootout from anand.

I dont think they are going to 1 mb cache this early on socket 754. I guess we will have to see.

The S-754 Athlon64 3200+ is already 1MB

All I can say is that I was dead set on a P4 2.8 or 3Ghz 865PE/875P system. If this price is true...even if it only has 512 L2...I'm going AMD again. Some argue that 64-bit operation is a useless feature right now, but I already dualboot Linux/XP so it has plenty of potential for me. I'm sure there are others in a similar boat or with a desire to be ready for the next 64-bit OS.

edit: content

totally confused. Are all of the A64 (not FX) chips 754 pin? What is with the Cache are they 512kb, 1mb or 2mb? How can two chips be 3000+ if both run at 2.0ghz but on has 512kb cache and the other 1mb? wouldnt the 1mb one be way faster? Isnt the 2.0ghz A64 called the 3200+?

Guess I will not be upgrading soon, until I can figure all of this madness out.

Good price if its 2.0ghz 1mb.

Actually it should only run at 1.8Ghz

FX-51 2.2Ghz 940pin DualChannel
A64 3200+ 2.0Ghz 754 SingleChannel
A64 3000+ 1.8Ghz 754 SingleChannel

All have 1Mb cache
