Another 8IRXP based system issue

I've started to build a new machine based around this motherboard with a 2.0A P4, Radeon 8500, 2 x 256MB crucial DDR ram. However, I had the system running for about 30 mins. when going through the bios settings (hadn't changed anything yet) the machine froze and started emmitting a loud almost continuous beeping noise - beeping for 2-3 seconds accompanied by a flashing power LED. There is then a slight pause and the rapid sequence beeping continues. Switching off at the power supply seems to be the only way to stop it. I was not attempting to overclock and at first boot, it did detect everything correctly it seemed.

I looked at the post earlier with "beep codes" but didn't see anything there about an almost continuous tone - almost like a phone ringing. The Gigabyte web site, manuals (on and off line make no mention of it, noone from Gigabyte support is replying to my e-mail so I don't really have any idea what this is pointing to as an error. As I don't have second P4 or P4 motherboard to check things I've tried to remove/add components to finds out when the beeping stops. I was able to borrow a second P4 compat. power supply and try that - same issue. here's what else I found:
1. CPU, cpu fan, 2 x 256mb ram modules, video card, power supply fan - beeping tone, no post
2. remove, memory one at a time, switching modules in first slot and all else as above - beeping
3. remove all memory - beeping
4. remove video card - beeping
5. remove power supply fan - beeping (only CPU and CPU fan left)
6. try second CPU fan - spins up as before but beeping
7. remove cpu - no beeping
8. add components except cpu - no beeping but fans spin up, memory led on etc
9 add cpu - beeping again

does it sound like the CPU is dead.... that's what I'm thinking. Anyone able to help with other ideas or know what this beeping tone is (award bios)

Thanks for any suggestions

unplug the power cable and clear the bios

but you have to make sure the power cable is unplugged when clearing the cmos

thanks .... I had tried that several times. However, your post prompted me to remove the battery. Lo and behold, when replacing the battery the system now posts ... it states it has a CMOS check sum error - defaults loaded. This is real progress. Tommorrow I'll hook up the drives and see if I can get things a little further.

the good news is - no fried processor (although Newegg said they'd swap it).

sounds like there may be many issues with this board and as such without a good tech support team now may be the time to bail on the gigabyte board while you still can or ride it out and see if they can fix it

Imho any company that responds the way they did to a anandtecher would never get my business as trust is a two way street and if i couldn't trust their tech support then i guess when the sh@#
hits the fan i am all alone knowing i pay for tech support(standard) this is unacceptable and maybe my money would best be spent elsewhere so i don't get that dreaded buyers remorse when the sh-- hits the fan

is it too late for you muir?

and i clocked mine back to default cause im wainting on my pc2700 and honestly havent noticed a difference :)

Strawberrymom, there goes all the praise that you had for the 8IRXP :p

Hmm, from what you can see, it beeps with a CPU in the socket, but it doesn't beep without a CPU. Does that necessarily indicate a dead CPU? The ram...well, Crucial rarely has two sticks in a row fail on people. I don't know; it could be the mobo. I think it's either the CPU or the mobo, but you'd have to test with more components to confirm.

Well,

after removing the battery - I have things up and running. Am adding in various boards now and no more issues - at least so far. I am beginning to feel jinxed with this board as I downloaded the latest bios file from Gigabyte's site (f4) and the bios updater and the updater says that the bios labelled for the 8irxp is the wrong one.
Download the 4mbit version !

I've built systems around Soyo and Abit boards before and bever had this kind of trouble.

At least I'll be able to push the clock speed up soon.

Hi there, I'm not as lucky as you (Muir) were, the revision on the motherboard I have, DOES NOT have the Jumper to clear the CMOS, the sockets are there but no pins, I'm sure you know what Im talking about. So what other suggestions do any of you have? I tried taking out the battery and putting it back in, and nothing. :( I do not have any other parts to test the system with so it sucks because I can't determine what component is bad and to top it off, gigabyte is close till next week :(

System configuration:
GA-8IRXP
Intel Northwood 2.2GHz
ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV
1GB Kingston Valueram DDR (2X512)
Creative Labs Audigy Platinum

as you can see, I spent all my income tax return on it :( so I have no $ left to buy other parts to test it out :( so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, my system never turned on, so I never even got to see it boot up.
