Ok, I bought a 7800gtx when they were the greatest thing since sliced bread, but I want to do sli. Maybe not now but around christmas time or tax time. I'm noticing that they are becoming scarce on places like newegg and even ebay. I know the question has been asked before but can I mix types of cards? I have a BFG right now.

You can mix cards from different Manufactuers (BFG, eVGA) but they have to be the same type of card, like 7800GTX, 7800GT, 7900GT...

you could also sell the 7800gtx and just buy 2 7900gt. would cost less. Cheapest 7800gtx is $369 on newegg 7900gt is $229 each so if you sold your current 7800gtx for $89 the price would come out the same and I know you can sell the 7800gtx for way more than $89. You will save more than $100 by actually selling the 7800gtx and buying 2 of these and the performance will be similar, if a little bit in favor of the 7900gt.

Nice idea, but I'm not a huge fan of XFX, I prefer to stay with BFG and or Gigabyte for my video cards. Nice suggestion however

I wasnt a fan for abotu a year, but recently, ive noticed great strides, transferrable lifetime warranty and improving customer service has moved xfx up in my bok, not near bfg but above gigabyte for sure.
Best to worst
BFG
ASUS(if you can afford it, asus usually adds something nice and extra to the card or the bundle)
XFX/EVGA
Leadtek
Gigabyte/MSI(average,slightly above average)
Nice big gap
PNY

Wow, Im suprised that you would rank XFX at the same level as EVGA and above leadtek

lol, what a rediculous rank. for one thing, PNY makes some of the best cards. Why do you think they are the only manufacturer that makes Quadro cards. Umm I guess nvidia is dumb enough to give Quadro chips that sell for 2000 dollars and up to a crap manufacturer.

But nonetheless, PNY includes nothing in their bundles usually (thats why their GeForce cards are usually cheaper then the competition) so I would not necessarely buy a PNY card. My rank goes like this:

BFG
PNY
EVGA
XFX

The reason I put BFG on top of PNY is because their cards are factory OC and stable, and because you get an amazing bundle with their cards. I wont even include ASUS or GygaByte in the rank. Those guys make goods motherboards and thats what they should stick to instead of making overpriced video cards.

Bah! I've had a PNY, eVGA, ASUS, Gainward, Built-by-ati cards and a few other companies. Never had a problem with any. I usually buy based on price now.

As far as quality is concerned, its all withing decent confines but customer service when something goes wrong is what seperates 1 company from the other. Also bonuses and the little details liek nice coolers make a difference, after all the devil is in the details.

yet another person that has never had to call pny consumer(not business) customer support.

Gigabyte makes decent coolers, asus almost always come up with a better, innovative cooler and something extra for the price and customer support is not bad at all.

BBA is good customer service but last tiem I checked BBA cards dont work in sli, also their warranty is too short.
Gainward takes months to rma in america since you have ot ship to the european division since the us has shut its doors.
PNY is ok quality, horrible english mangled runaround custom,er service.

This is how i would rank them.
EVGA (The BEST customer support EVER, not to mention step up programs)
BFG/Leadtek
Asus
PNY/Gigabyte
MSI
XFX (They have ZERO customer support, and have shut down their forums for obivous reasons)
Chaintech

I suggest the OP to get 2 7900GT instead of buying a 7800GTX. Not only a 7900GT is cooler and consume less power, but also retains the same number of pipelines as the 7800GTX. Simply 7800GTX(110nm) = 7900GT (90nm)

The cheapest ive seen of the 7900GTs is 220~ AR.
