Another 75GXP bites the dust ...32gb data lost

Well my 45gb 75GXP finally went. It's been Scratching and clicking for awhile and sometimes it wasn't even recognized by the bios. I tried to make it last as long as possible. I could get it to work by taking it out of my system and turning it on it's side or upside down; that would work just long enough for me to back up critical stuff.

However today was when all my data just when poof....it just disappered. So it's RMA time. and time to rebuild my FTP 🙁🙁🙁

Sorry to here that...What a bunch of duds the IBM 75Gxp line was...Hopefully you get a 60gxp and not a refurbed 75gxp...

is there a consensus on whether the 60gxp have similar problems, or is that situation just overhyped because of the 75gxp problems?

i have the same question. wasn't sure if i should get a 60gb 60gxp... so i just went ahead and got a 80gb maxtor d740x, so we'll see.

I have 2 15gb 75gxp's I've had since Aug 2000 and never had a problem, knock on wood. Sorry to hear your troubles.

yeah. I had a 45GB 75gxp go bad on me recently. Got the bad sectors, used teh dft utility to format it, got the probs again, format again 3 weeks later.
2 weeks after that I get the bad sectors again. Just RMA'd mine.

*ALL* Hard drives *WILL* fail at one time or another! It's not a matter of IF, it's a matter of WHEN!!!

Simple advice, if losing data on your disk(s) will be burdensome, develop a backup strategy and STICK TO IT!!!

Data recovery services are banking that you WON'T, and make you pay dearly for it!

At the very least one should have a file server to store their data with (at the VERY LEAST) a mirrored volume. This still needs to be backed up in case of a catastrophe (ex 09/11) and the most obvious: accidental user mistake!

Cheers!

You could always go with a raid solution.

Or if you dont like the speed hit from that then just have a backup HD wich you mirror to regularly as stated above.

DVD-RW's is also an option as cd's are to small to backup several GB of data practically.

Could take some time though.

Just a thought. 😀
