Im putting together a system (though IM still tossing around lots of stuff)

if I went

epox 8rda+
barton 2500
and 512 hyperx 2700

should I put in a

WD 40 gig ultra ata 100 8mb cache drive

or

another 512 of hyperx

opinions?

im trying to keep myself within a tight budget.

my current hd is a 20 gig ultra 66 7200 rpm 2mb cache.

I appreciate the suggestions, but in all honesty a person can nickle and dime themselves to death by saying.. just spend a little more on this. so you have to set a firm budget and stick to it.

the 80 gig solution doesnt fit into my budget.

unless u actually need the extra 20gb and its not related to hd performance i would go for the extra stick of ram if u game a lot

I would say get the drive. That will help your performance far more than the other stick of memory in the here and now. You can always get another stick later if you manage to save up for it. Plenty of people are getting by just fine with 512MB.

If you aren't in danger of filling up your present HD, I'd suggest going for the extra RAM.

If you are running WindowsXP and playing any modern games...... I PROMISE you ARE in danger of watching that little light flash
while you wile away the moments in virtual memory.

on a side note, I don't think you will notice much of a performance gain in a single app. (ie: one app. only running) with either choice. The times you will see something are like when you finish a round of BF1942 on line, exit the game and watch your system crawl for a couple minutes on virtual memory. I have no idea what it is doing or why, but I know when I was on 512 it did it and now it doesn't seem to.

You are also at risk if you do several jobs at once of seeing that annoying HD spin it's lil' heart out.

But again, NOTHING sux worse than deciding what application to uninstall in order to make room for the new one you just bought.... so you make the call:

confident you won't fill your present HD..... Get the RAM
wondering if you have room on your present HD..... Get the HD

If you arent suffering from a lack of HD space, another Stick of 512MB HyperX (better than Corsair) is the best choice.

Heres your two options in detail.

HD
You can install more stuff.
You can use you old harddrive for games or as a backup drive.

RAM
You open more programs.
Can come in handy for memory intensive games.

IMHO, i`d go for the HD. You have plenty of ram anyway, and i`m willing to be that after a few games are installed, that the 20gb seems small. Go for the biggest HD you can, and use the 20gb as a games only drive, or as a place to store things like docuements, music, driver/system updates and general backups.

Get a WD 80gb 7200rpm SE HDD. 8mb cache makes EVERYTHING faster!! I have one my self and XP Pro runs blazing fast compared to my WD 5400rpm 2m cache HDD's "pretty fast".

I would suggest getting the HDD since u only have 20GBs. I have 20GBs and that's not enough. There's a deal @ OfficeMax to get the WD 8MB Buffer 120GBs for $30 after rebates and instants. Check that out.

My suggestion would be for you to determin which you need more of. Storage or the ability to run more, smoothly. My girlfriend has a 40GB hard drive, of which she currently uses about 5-8GB. She's in school so works on and saves lots of documents and other projects. She also has like 5-6 different apps open at once (Dreamweaver MX, Photoshop, several instances of IE, etc) so she needed more RAM. I, on the other hand, wanted more space to store my MP3s and videos, so I went with the hard drive space (between my 2 PCs I am up to ~678GB) so I bought hard drives first, than upgraded to RAM later.
