One of the contractors responsible for manufacturing CPU's for the Xbox 360 has revealed that it is currently working on a 45-nanometer design, due for release late next year or early in 2009.

A smaller CPU for the Xbox 360 would help reduce manufacturing costs for Microsoft, as well as produce less heat in the console itself.

"We have customers' activity for products in the CPU space that goes into a video game device," said Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing's CEO Chia Song Hwee, reports PC Advisor.

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has previously produced 90nm and 65nm versions of the Xbox 360 processor.

"As 65nm just started production in the last two quarters, you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe," offered Chia, refering to an expected production timeframe.

Sorry, Dave...had to poke fun. ;)

The last paragraph is the most interesting to me. Suggesting that the 65nm has been in production the last two quarters means that we should be seeing them on the shelves soon....hopefully.

Sounds about right, maybe the 45nm process is when we'll see a redesign of the 360 case, ala the PStwo. It worked wonders for Sony, I think Microsoft should do it to.

So, how many people will we hear say that they will just wait for the 45nm box instead of getting a 65nm? :D

I wish the thing would just be quieter. It even outdoes my PC in terms of noise production.

CheapyD at CAG commented that the Halo 3 edition of the 360 was noticeably quieter. Not as quiet as the PS3 but close. Presumably, this had the 65nm chips in it.

I've noticed that my launch window 360 has gotten noticeably louder recently. I don't know if this is a prelude to it crapping out or not. Just need it to wait for the 65nm chips to come out before it does. :laugh:

Yea, my launch 360 isn't too loud until it starts using that DVD drive. I'm planning on picking up a 65nm Elite sometime this year.

Now they just need to make the DVD drive quieter and better (DVD scratching).

I read the Falcon is supposed to ship with improved DVD drives (quieter and scratch free)

Yay! But now I have to wait 18 months!? :cry;

I'll be happy with a 65nm as long as they really do make it the Reliable Edition :)
