So in the midst of posting about my RAM problem, I noticed that my cd-rw drive does not identify in the device manager. I think it's the 1635 product, and I guess I can look at the drive itself easily enough, since I do need to open the case to test my danged RAM in the other two slots, but does anybody know of a good way to check this without opening it up?

Booting to KNOPPIX always works for me, since I tend to have a cd lying around. It's autodetect is really, really good. Plus, it's super convinient to have around anyway, so you should probably go ahead and download it if you can.

for the uninitiated: KNOPPIX is a stand-alone linux distrobution that you can boot to from a CD. It's non-volitle, and won't hurt your windows install, and to get rid of it all you do is reboot and take out the CD. (Actually, I think they're up to a DVD version now too, but that's a moot point).

Come to think of it though, device manager picked up my cd-rw with no problems, just as it should. If there are no yellow "!"'s in the device manager, then chances are it's actually hooked up wrong. If windows can't identify it, it should at least come up as a generic cd-rom. Check your cables, and check to make sure all the jumpers are set to Cable Select (or master/slave if you know how).

Thanks, NQAN, I was about to ask that myself. And yes, Skisteven, it does come up as a generic drive and seems to function normally, but I was actually thinking I should check for driver/firmware updates and noticed I couldn't tell what for. Oh well, no biggy, since it works right now I probably shouldn't try to update anything anyway, eh?

Thanks for replying, everybody!

Update the firmware.
How would you do that if you don't know the manufacturer or model ??

Every drive I've seen has the model number printed on the case.

Please read the first post completelyand pay attention to the last part of the last sentence. He doesn't want to open the case and remove the Drive. He just asked if there was a way to identify it via BIOS or something other than device manager. I agree with you, if he chooses to look, he will likely find the make and model somewhere on the drive case.

AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!!! I fixed the RAM issue and FORGOT TO LOOK AT THE CD-RW!!! Dangit, I'm such an idiot! Guess I'll try that everest thingy.
