If there was, it would sure kill the throughput and make using bittorrent pointless.

So everyone downloading warez using torrents can be tracked? (ie no way to hide their tracks?)
Doesnt matter to me, the last torrent i downloaded was ubuntu, but i am curious.

Since you're connecting to other machines, everyone has your IP. I'm not sure why the tracker couldn't encrypt everyone's IP. That would be great.

Yes, of all file sharing apps Bit Torrent is the easiest to track the users. Just open the torrent and you can see everyones IP Address. As opposed to IRC which uses host masking to make users anonymous for all intents and purposes.

The Bit Torrent software itself needs the IP addresses. But there is no reason the users should be able to view or have access to them.

If you use BT, you should at the very least be behind a proxy.

Not sure how effective they are, but you could at least use an IP-blocking program like the SafePeer plugin for Azureus. I'm not sure how many IPs it is blocking exactly, but it claims 64.7% of the internet. You can view what IP ranges it blocks; lots of MPAA/RIAA/gov domains, so I believe it is better than nothing!!

Pretty much. All you need is access to the tracker to get a list of peers currently downloading whatever torrents it's tracking, most even keep stats so you can see who's sharing/downloading how much.

Since you're connecting to other machines, everyone has your IP. I'm not sure why the tracker couldn't encrypt everyone's IP. That would be great.

Because then the tracker becomes the proxy and everyone is limited to it's available bandwidth. If the other peers can't get your IP they can't connect to you to deliver the data.
