Ok, my new rig is loud as hell... but I don't really mind the humming of the fans... but the cpu fan is making some horrid sound. Usually I can ignore it... but since I know its there right now, I sometimes pause what I'm doing and start concentrating on it... sort of like the two lines on the Sony monitors (think all monitors based on the trinitron tube have it right?).

At first, I wasn't sure which fan it was, I have 4 antec 80 mm fans. Two came with the case, and the other two I bought from Outpost. Then there's the power supply fan. I thought it was the powersupply, but after putting my ears next to the rear fans (power supply and the two 80mm exhaust) I figured it was something else, so I opened up the case and figured it was the CPU fan... hard to think something that small can produce such a racket. To test it out, I placed my finger on the middle and applied some pressure to slow the fan down... (not sure if it'll be detrimental in the long run) and the noise disappeared. So, I'm pretty damn sure it's the cpu fan. It's the one that came with the Taisol heatsink and the AMD T-bird (1.1) ghz retail package.

Anyone have any similar experiences with it? I don't think I can stand this much longer. So I was wondering if you guys had a better fan to recommend that would fit on that Taisol heatsink. Not sure exactly what model number that heatsink is. The sound is sort of like a rattle... it's kind of high pitch and low at the same time, hard to describe. What's annoying is that it changes in frequency and loudness. If it just kept the same frequency or loudness I think I'd be less annoyed. So anyone have one to recommend? And if I do change it, I could leave the heatsink attached to the chip and mobo right? I just have to unscrew the fan and screw the new one in and plug in the power to the mobo right? By the way, how the heck does the MSi mobo tell the rotational speed of the fan???

Is this your fan, if so then you should look elsewhere because this fan is only moderately loud, especially considering you have 5 other 80mm. Although in dealing with the taisol fan, I have noticed that 2 of 5 I've owned do tend to make a much higher pitch and more vibration than others, just poor quality control. A correctly working fan is very quiet on the taisol heatsink, put it on an alpha and it starts to sound a lot like the delta 38s.

I've had luck replacing the delta with http://phamcomputer.safeshopper.com/18/79.htm?426 the quiet adda but it could be a problem at 1.1gig. Works fine on celerons though.

Any standard 60mm fan will do. Just get some long screws and jam them into the fins. Not pretty but it will kill the vibration present with the stock metal clips. Try plugging the fan into another header, not the cpu header just in case you have cpu fan off in suspend enabled.
Also try running with 1 exhaust,1 intake, 1ps fan, 1 cpu fan. Anything more is overkill.

Thanks for the reply. I think the fan on the right in that picture is the one I have. I've been thinking about shutting down some of the fans... but the humming really doesn't bother me. It kinda sounds peaceful hehehe.

Anyway, would it be better to have what you said, 1 of everything or no intake and two exhausts? I have most of the cables taped up to the side or bundled out of the way so circulation isn't bad. But the fan in the harddrive cage, it cools the hd's fine, but the ide cable blocks most of the air coming outta there... I'm pretty sure my harddrive's don't produce much heat, so I might disable that one, and the one below it. It's really far down on the bottom... I just had those fans because this was my first AMD system.. and I had heard about all the heat problems.

By the way, this is an Antec SX1030 case.. in reference to the hd cage with the fan... cpu fans aren't 60 mm's right? It just so happens that you can sorta jam the 60 mm on their right? I'm not sure if I want to jam one in there... no experience really, so can someone recommend a really nice quiet cpu fan for my Taisol?

Now I'm gonna start fooling around with which fans to turn off to see how they affect the system... gotta install that MSi utility first though... which one was it again? Time to pull out the manual...

if you think your case/cpu is already cool enough and can risk a bit more heat, you might want to think about running your cpu fan at 7v.

This site might interest you: 7volts

Running your fan at 7v will make it spin less, thus reducing the vibration noises a bit. But it'll also push less air, so your cpu might get hotter. It's the price we all have to pay for some peace and quiet...
