annoying problem...??

ok, i'll start with the basic setup...i have a cable modem with 3 computers connected via a linksys router, and i'm using win2k with a generic nic with the realtek8139 chip.

basically, sometimes when i am downloading a large file or many small files at the same time i lose the connection for about 20 seconds. the downloads pause (and sometimes time out which is very annoying), and i basically have no connection briefly. it seems like the equivelant of getting kicked offline, except i obviously don't have to dial back up. it doesn't happen often, and not while casual browsing. i don't use the other 2 computers often enough to know if it is just my computer. i'm not sure if this is:

a hardware problem (something with the nic or my computer in general)

an isp thing where they "pause" my connection if i "hog" bandwidth

a software thing where settings can be adjusted in windows

anyone have any ideas or thoughts?

i think it's your NIC's problem...
Does it also happen when your downloading on differnet types of browsers? If it does, then its your NIC and if it doesn't, its your browser

I dont know, give it a shot, play around with it

ledzepp98,

Try a driver update on the Realtek NIC. My Win2K test bench is running the 8139 through the Linksys and I was having similar problems. I screwed with different driver sets and finally hit on one that solved the problem.
