ANNOYING POP-UPS

Smooth

I am getting pop-up ads while working on my computer. I am not logged into the internet nor do I have IE open, but the pop-ups still keep popping up. I have ran Ad-Aware and looked for unknown programs in Add/Remove Software but they still keep coming up. It seems to be the same ads all the time though. One is "Stop the popup" with a bullseye in the middle of the ad. Anybody have any idea what is going on or how to remove these things. Thanks.

Give Spybot a try too - be sure to download the updates with its built-in updater. I don't use Adaware anymore since Spybot came out.

I agree, it rocks. It even has a "Spyware Firewall" that blocks spyware from downloading or installing, pretty funky. 🙂

check msconfig and see what programs are starting up wiht your pc. if anything is stupid or bad, get rid of it. ctrl+alt+delete and see whats running, because its probably one of those. also, if you have morpheus, kazaa, or just about any other p2p program, chances are you installed some crap.

looks like a good program. Unfortunately I clicked the wrong language the first time I ran it, and now it doesnt let me switch languages!! I tried uninstalling and reinstalling... didnt work, still a font i cant display🙁

You can check on what's running on your system by trying this:

Windows 98 (and possible ME): go to the start menu, then run, and type in "msconfig". Go over to the tab marked "startup" and look over all the programs that are started. If one seems fishy, unclick the box next to it and restart. The program also might be hiding in some of the other tabs, but it's doubtful.

Windows 2000/XP (and maybe ME): Go to the start menu, then settings, then administrative tools. Go to Services. It should list all the programs that are currently running from startup as well as others that have been disabled/set to manual startup (i.e. you have to turn them on yourself) Check for the program there, and you should be able to disable it.

Oh yeah, have you downloaded anything that you think might have come bundled with adware? If you can think of the programs it'd help narrow it down.

Check to make sure you dont have microsoft messenger installed or running, they are giving popup ads now when running. I'll try to find the link for the removal of the program

Nah, don't remove the program, just go to the services window (as described above) and shut it off, then set it to manual. It's just called "Messenger".

I don't recommend deleting it as it's vaguely useful when you're at a LAN trying to communicate with other users.
