Annoying mouse problem on laptop

I have an HP Pavilion P4-2.4 laptop - about 3 yrs. old. I'm not fond of using the mousepad, so I used the small usb mouse that came with it. Well, I had dropped the usb mouse several times and, after a while, it didn't work. So, I switched to a PS/2 mouse.

Now, that's not working. It freezes up and, if I play with the connection, it'll start working again but then freeze after a few minutes. I don't want to keep fiddling with the connection because I don't want to damage it. Nothing comes up in Device Manager. I tried d/l'ing an updated mouse driver. When I went to install it, just as it was finishing, I got an "Internal Error" prompt.

I realize that I can still use the mousepad, but an external mouse is much easier to use. Any suggestions about trying to fix this?

EDIT: Just tried another usb mouse (which I know works) - and nothing! Something is happening where the mousepad only works but no external mouses - whether usb or ps/2 ones. I can't figure out why both external devices won't work...

Buy a new USB mouse!

Is there anything in the Control Panel that controls the touchpad? It might be a case of either the touchpad is on (and in full control) or ps2 is on. Check your control pad for mouse settings and see if you can toggle the touchpad off. Of course, the danger, albeit a slight one, is that you won't have any mouse control if you toggle it off. But, you can always use the keyboard to get back to the control panel to toggle it back on.
