Annoying CPU lock-ups.

Hey all,

This is what is happening. Whenever I play games my computer just simply freezes. After updating the newest nVidia drivers, the system started to lock up (freeze) in games more frequently and much faster - within 10mins of playing a game.

I have reinstalled the drivers and used a bit older ones that came on the original disc for my GF3 ti-500. Now, the games that freeze mostly of all are GTA3 and Neverwinter Nights. The second one is just a nightmare. It use to work fine but after the first crash, it freezes now like crazy. I have updatred both of the games with new patches.

I was thinking of updating my BIOS, but it is pretty new so my next issue (aside from the mobo which i know it is not the best - but ok for the price) is the power supply. Can my computer freeze while playing games do to lack of power??? Is my ANTEC 300W PS good enough to power an XP1600 and the other goodies like the GF3? I understand if I would need to by a new PS but i don't want to shell out the cash untill i am certain it is that that causes the system hangs. (Could it be my GF?)

These are my specs in a nutshell.
512MB PC133 RAM
ECS K75SA mobo
XP 1600
Cd- Burner
CD-ROM
2 Hard Drives
ANTEC 300W PS

Please help, this is quite anoying.
Thanks all.

PS: The most mest up thing is that 4 months ago everything was perfect, no problems at all. Also, during power draining activities such as cd burning the system works fine.

Looks like your power supply should be fine for your setup. What kind of temps are you getting with your system?

Well there's good news and bad news.

The good news is your diagnoses is most likely correct (P.S.) . Those GF ti 500 suck the juice, I would think is similar to a Ti4200, which Nvidia reccomends a 350 PS. The bad news is your wallet is going to weighing less... Like mine these days

Not true really. Power supplies are overated although he might need an upgrade here but I really don't believe thats the problem.

I too agree that the PS is not the problem... I would look to heat on the cpu (improperly mounted HS/fan) or possibly the ram...? If its in 2-256meg sticks take one out and test then swap to the other...? If its a single 512meg then use something else...? Also try it with the lowest possible timings and if its there already then go up and if the problem gets worse you`ve found your problem.... 😉

Yes i've got 2 sticks of 256MB of Ram and although I have not tried that yet, I was thinkig of checking my ram modules by testing each seperately. I downclocked my CPU to something like 1050Mhz (100/100MHZ) setting and it seems just fine. I have only 3 settings for CPU/RAM on my mobo - (its not an overclockers one, just something to make the PC work 😉)
100/100
100/133
133/133

The last one is the proper one which identifies the CPU as an AMD 1600+. So it is either the RAM which cannot work on high speeds, or there is not enogugh "greese" on the die of the CPU. I will try running the comp on 100/133 setting and see if the RAM modules give me trouble - if not, i think i will remve the CPU and check the thermal paste. What do ya all think? U all agree?
