I generally don't mind ad banners on Web sites, as long as they are not of the annoying animated variety. So if you don't want to completely turn off ads (to support the site), but don't want to see the animations, do this:
In Internet Explorer, select the "Tools" menu, then the "Internet Options" item. A window with settings will come up. Click the "Advanced" tab (it should be the last one). Scroll down to the middle or so of the list with settings, to the "Multimedia" section. Clear the "Play Animations" checkbox and click "OK".
This will prevent Gif animations from playing, but will still show their first frame. You will be able to see the image, just not its animation.
I hope this helps.
