I just got back from a med chem grad student's symposium in Ann Arbor, and am still feeling the effects of the night life. As a member of a very brave group from OSU, we traveled up to UMich and enjoyed ourselves. Dispite going to other bars, all nights ended at Ashley's ( 338 South State Street ).

The grad students who arranged the conference were great - Parag Aggarwal in particular was very helpful in helping the OSU crowd have a great trip to the land of the Wolverines.

My reason for this post (and reason I will be taking a long nap very shortly):

If you're ever in the neighborhood, stop by there (gets busy towards midnight - easy to get a table at 10 pm) and have a Tripel Karmeliet. great beer . Also recommended, the La Fin Du Monde and Chimay Grande Reserve .

My sister used to tend bar at Ashleys, I second that vote for the beers you have selected, La FinDu Monde (The End of the World) is an excellent French brew (French?!!) and Chimay is made by monks (no kiddin')

I would also recommend a Hacker-Pschorr Hefe, something even the girls can drink (taste is kind of like thick banana and lemon brew)

I walk through the art fair every day to get to work! Some really nice stuff I must say and the smell oohhhhh I love carnival/fair food.

Ashley's is awesome. I usually get the Crooked Tree IPA, but will try some of the reccommendations here next time.

Yep, but $20 for a 750 mL bottle..... it's like a fair wine in alcohol content and price. Ohio laws forbid the sale / direct shipment of beer over 6 % and require that a person register and pay taxes for up to 3 or 5 gallons (can't remember which) of wine they can bring into the state themselves.... darn laws.

I went looking for this recently because I wanted to order a "follow-up" to give to some friends at the end of the month. Birthdays on the 31st and the 2nd.
