anisotropic filtering & anti-aliasing...

I was wondering what the REAL difference in graphic quality was. Can someone give me some info or some links with comparisons? I've been a bit skint with luck finding it myself.

AF makes a huge gain across the board in terms of sharpness while AA's IQ gain is diminished as you increase the resolution.

To add to this... I have a 6800. Should I enable either AA or AF via the nvidia setup. Or just keep "application determined"?

AF really improves the real-ness of a game by fixxing how textures look from a perspective. There isn't too much of a performance hit in your games using this. AA can take a huge toll on performance, but with a 128mb card, the best resolution I have found to be is 1024x768, in which 4xAA drastically improves image quality, but doesn't impact FPS too much.

It's generally preferable to enable AF and AA with the game, but many older games don't offer this option, so you're left to force them via the drivers. nV has per-app settings, though, so it should be relatively simple to enable AA and AF either via the game or the drivers, depending on the game.

But the 6800 should be powerful enough to just enable 4xAA and 16xAF for everything at 1024x768. At 1280x960/1024 in newer games, you're probably going to want to dial down AA, as you'll be bumping into bandwidth and memory size limitations.

Should I enable either AA or AF via the nvidia setup.
Do it through the drivers - always use 16xAF and use AA on a per-game basis. nV's application profiles make this a breeze. You might also like to enable the three optimization settings nVidia offers because they improve performance without impacting IQ very much.

It's generally preferable to enable AF and AA with the game,
I disagree as it's far easier and more desirable to control games' settings through a central location (the control panel) rather than hunting around game menus and INI/CFG files.
