Specifically, the same episodes that were once available in this box set. But I believe it's out of print. Same goes for the individual discs, it appears - it seems that every where I look, the place is missing at least one of the four, and don't expect to have them in any time soon. So has Pioneer/Geneon put out another release? There's this one, but I think it's new material, rather than the original series...

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

Right, and the customer reviews at netflix say it's not very good.

Rightstuf.com has DVDs 1-3 of the OVA in stock, so if you can find someone else with number 4 you're set.

I've seen the OVAs, In Tokyo, and Universe, and the OVAs are my favorite version. The first couple of movies (In Love, Daughter of Darkness) are also good and not just a retelling of the OVAs.

I was big into Tenchi Muyo back in HS.

I have DVD set the OP is talking about plus another larger set. I also have all the movies and I think I may have al of TM in Tokyo.

God the new OVA was terrible. They made the old characters act like useless lap dogs just for this new girl who isn't even likable.

lol :) Glad I didn't grab it, then. That said, I didn't start this thread to be a moan & groan session about the new stuff; I'm trying to find out how and where to get my hands on the originals.

That's because Geneon USA has gone out of business, thus anything released by them is now out of print, including the first two Tenchi OVA series (what you're looking for).

RightStuf appears to have them still, though, at $18 per volume (there are four).

really? so who gets the publishing license (Tenchi or any of the other titles) now? Or do they all just sit?

Nobody has anything yet that I'm aware of, but it's likely that a lot of the licenses will get picked up by other publishers. Probably doesn't bode too well for older titles in general, though.
I'd say Funimation probably has the inside line on Tenchi, as they have the rights to the 3rd OVA series already.

That's what I was thinking. I always wondered why Funi got the publishing rights for GXP and the new OVA when Pioneer/Geneon had done everything else.

I've had good luck with Amazon used sellers if you want to take a chance on the box set used.

Right Stuf has a 20% off sale right now so you could get the single DVDs 1-3 (but not 4) for about $15 each. They carry the movie box set (1-3) but I didn't check whether it was in stock.

The Shingu box set (published by them) is on sale for $33 this week and is another fun series. The humor is much more subtle than Tenchi, and it's well-written with good characters.

This thread got me to watch the Tenchi box set and movies 1-2 again, they all hold up very well. I missed the third movie when it came out so I've finally ordered a copy.
