For me, my choice of anime DVDs to own would be the following:

Ninja Scroll
Fist of the North Star
Golgo 13
Crying Freeman (sort of a series tho, but not that many volumes)
Macross: Do You Remember Love

there's probably more, but I can't think of'em, mostly old stuff...

There's a really good Anime movie called "Grave of the Fireflies" which I really liked. It's a really powerful anime that talks about how these two orphan kids have to try to survive on their own because their mother and father died in World War 2. (This takes place during that time). It's an EXTREMELY depressing movie, which made me cry from beginning to end. Yes, I'm a girl and we're usually a little more emotional than guys, but when my brother watched it, he felt the exact same way as I did. In fact, he had to turn off the movie, because he couldn't take it. It's a really great movie and I recommend it, but be sure to have a LARGE box of tissues next to you.

Grave of the Fireflies

I watched this movie about a year ago and even when I think about it now, my eyes get watery.

I agree with Lyris. Grave of the Fireflies is an excellent movie. Princess Mononoke (sp?) is also good (if its availble in DVD format). The last Anime DVD I watched was Street FIghter Alpha 2. It was pretty good, but now as good as the above.

Kenshin OAV is awesome. It's really pretty deep, has great animation. The story is fantastic and opens the realm of Kenshin's past (which is kinda nice if you started watching the series first). I like the series so far too, but have only seen up to ep 31. I hear that the next 30 or whatever episodes are much closer to the manga, and much better on plot. (not that they were bad in the first place :)

Another good movie is Princess Mononoke. I think what I like most about it is that there is any "good guy" or "bad guy" (other than Ashitaka who'd be good by way of representing the side of compassion). You'll see that all the characters in the movie are simply trying to exist, and fight for what they believe. (Much like the Kenshin OAVs)

So I highly recommend those two animes. I you want to be mind-fV#ed. Then watch something like EVA (episodes higher than 15) or Lain. You should also watch Akira, it's like a requirment for any anime fan, IMHO. :)

Cheers

lol.......you might want to be wary of "La Blue Girl".....just a thought. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but still, not the kind of anime you'd be expecting.

I second the notion for AKIRA, although the DVD hasn't come out yet. Just wait a month, it'll be the best anime you've ever seen, and it was made from 86-88.

If you can stomach it, Perfect Blue. I haven't seen it, but I understand it contains some pretty harsh content. Not Hentai(bleech!), but more psychological/creepy things.

I had the 3 La Blue Girl DVDs, as well as midnight panthers, story line pretty much sucks but, who watches them for the storyline? ;)

Perfect Blue ain't good dude. Watched 20mins of it and switched it off.
Anyway, some of those listed is pretty good above.
If you like Princess Mononoke, you should watch Totoro...or all the anime by the same author. He's pretty famous in Japan. Others to look at is Tenchi
...and perhaps Pokemon? Hehehe. J/K!!!

..just my 2c.

First, check out Anime on DVD you'll find a lot of good info and reviews there. My personal favorites are the Cowboy Bebop series and the Castle of Cagliostro. There is a pretty decent selection of anime on dvd, it all depends on your preferences. The original Robotech series is going to be released soon too. I might pick it up for nostalgic reasons.

Umm, if you only watched Perfect Blue for 20min then you have no place saying it sucks, especially given the nature of the film and the fact that you won't really "get it" until the end.
