anime fans: looking for recommendations (sci-fi)

never thought i'd like anime but watching neon genesis and rahxephon changed my mind. i still don't like the idea of giant robots itself but the stories were very intriguing and immersive. i really like the focus on characters, how they discover things about themselves and the world etc. the feeling is almost the same as playing a good RPG...

anyway, i'm looking for something similar. specifically, i'm looking for sci-fi series with a strong core plot and focus on character(s), like what i saw. what i'm not looking for is some open-ended series with disconnected episodes (like most american tv series)

I recently bought "His and Her Circumstances" DVD boxed set from http://www.rightstuf.com for 40 bones. That's like 80 off retail. Go get yours.

- Kenshin
- Naruto
- Spirited Away
- Macross Plus
- Macross Zero
- Southern Cross
- Genesis Climber Moespeada

Ask VanillaH, he is the AT anime expert/knowledgebase. I would recommend Orphen, which is a scifi and comedy classic, but it's hard to find nowadays.

Edit.
Yeah, Ghost in the Shell (movie and series) are both excellent sci-fis. IIRC, Ghost in the Shell was part of the inspiration for the Matrix.
