I've always been a movie fan, but until a few months ago the only anime movie I watched was Akira. In the past months I've seen all the Appleseed movies (they were good) and the Miyazaki movies (some were excellent, some were ok).

I need some good anime movies to watch, especially action or sci-fi related. I wish there was time to watch anime series but I just can't. Only series I watched was Samurai Champloo, which was excellent, but I am really not into series.

What are some must-see anime movies? Reps in advance.

Damn, you almost got me. Was .02 seconds away from posting a legit response before I double checked the OP. Space reserved for future thoughts.

WTF? what do you mean "double checked the OP"? This is a serious thread, just like every single thread I've made. Please post a legit response...

Funny, I've been looking for some stuff to try out as I've never gotten into it. Never watched any anime really, had only seen Spirited Away and the other full feature movie like that one, I forget the title.

Anyway started by watching Macross Plus. 4 episodes, pretty entertaining.

Edit: Princess Mononoke was the other movie. Thanks sash1

Oh son of a bitch, why not.

Must See's that are deep enough to be fascinating but easy enough for first timers or Anime n00bs to adapt to:

1) Code Geass (Simply a must-see)
2) Basilisk (Rather graphic but extremely good story)
3) Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad (Amazing anime, the wife got me into this one - I didn't think it would be my thing, but it hooks you early and keeps going strong all the way through)
4) Eureka Seven (Sort of slow to start and slightly kidsy for my personal tastes, another one the wife started watching and I was hooked by the second episode)
5) Speed Grapher (Slightly broken up storyline at times, and tends to be borderline bizarre in it's adaptation of combat, but ends well)
6) Last Exile (Not many comments, Eureka Seven style animation, interesting story, has some gaps in the middle but never felt like it dropped off)
7) Ergo Proxy (Slightly slow to start, but shit hits the fan pretty early on and it's pretty interesting from there on)

Then there are the classic must-see series.. outside of Ghost in the Shell these tend to be slightly comical/kiddish for most people as "beginners", but the weathered Anime enthusiast typically has a love for these for various reasons.

1) Ghost in the Shell: SAC/Second Gig
2) Trigun
3) Trinity Blood
4) Gungrave
5) Tenjho Tenge
6) Samurai 7

I guess thats a good baseline. I just skimmed the last 6 months of my Netflix sub and those are the ones that stood out, there are hundreds more worth watching (and hundreds more NOT worth watching).

Enjoy.

check out Sword of the Stranger, it's awesome.

Also, Afro Samurai is pretty good and there's a sequel that's available. Sequel is more of the same from the first, but in a good way even though it doesn't really make much sense.

Another good recommendation for a live action movie that might as well be anime (physics defying fighting in the same vein as Crouching Tiger and Hero) is Shadowless Sword. Some highlights include underwater sword fighting, mid-air sword fighting and an awesome fight between one hot chick and entire gang of Jack Sparrows. It's one of those "early-in-the-movie-to-show-just-how-awesome-the-main-character-is" fights. Great movie.

edit: Ergo Proxy is terrible. Don't waste your time.

I actually started watching a new anime for once this past weekend... I decided to watch History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi, but my god I cannot stand the main character's voice >_<. But I can just ignore that.

Oh and there are too many bitchy little emo kids in Gundam 00. Andrei went Super Emo-jin in this past episode.

Don't tell me you've actually watched this chicks with (what rhymes with chicks) 'entai?

I actually saw an episode of the sequel (never saw the original). It was really fucked up.

Tenten? ... I didn't think anyone really liked that one ( except for me :D )... same with Gungrave. I also think it's amusing that Trigun is popular over here but it never really took off in Japan :p.

:music: Bomb A Head! Ohhh yeah! It's party time~! Party time~!:music:

Man, I personally love Tenjho Tenge. I don't really know why it has such a bad wrap. I really can't stand the majority of the Gundam series simply because the entire giant robots genre just doesn't do it for me. Typically way too cliche and they use mecha combat as an excuse to be lazy too often for my tastes. About the only ones that ever pulled it off adequately were Evangelion and Gunsword - but even Gunsword is a huge stretch because the only thing I could tolerate was Van. Everytime the Voltron like robot showed it's face I just cringed in agony. Trigun is just downright awesome because Vash is such a damn joker.

That list was pretty small. Glancing over my Netflix history I've watched some 350 DVD's between the wife and I. Still have the fucking "Kitty Ear Mode" song stuck in my damn head.

From personal experience, the majority of anime (with very small exception, see: Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop) shown on US broadcast television is typically heavily westernized already and usually edited to hell and back. You'd never see something like Basilisk on US TV, but it's such an extraordinarily good story. Basilisk is probably the only anime I've re-queued in Netflix to watch twice.

Kara no Kyoukai for sheer eyecandy factor alone; the story might be a bit confusing to follow without (even with) reading the novel, but nothing a quick background reading on wikipedia can't help.

Blassreiter was one of few aciton series that I actually cared about and finished all the way through. Some of the most seamless 3d-2d mix I have seen to date, a generally good storyline and likable characters to go with. The finish was a bit anti-climactic but had more than enough happening leading up to that point.

Blackgod from Sunrise looked very promising in the first episode, or so I thought. The thing is everyone is telling me to expect a major flop in execution, drawing quality and everything in general in eps3. Oh well.

Last but not least, I was quite impressed with the updates they have made to the Evangerion: Jo, ranging from major battle scenes to trivial sound effects and background noises, etc. They did a good job of abridging everything into one sitting culminating to one of the most memorable scenes in the series.
