I got an early copy of the Animatrix and while it's a mixed bag, I truly think The Second Renaissance is some of the best science fiction I've seen in years, animated or otherwise. I'd love to see a whole series (ongoing story) of animation based in this universe, especially in the style of these two shorts. Anyone else?

The problem is that the people that did the animatrix shorts are the biggest anime directors in Japan. The chance of landing one of them to do a regular series is pretty low.

The Matrix appears to be popular enough to support such a thing- there definately seems to be interest- a 26 part series would be perfect. One of the premium channels like HBO would pick it up in a hearbeat- and it could be produced in English and Japanese simultaneously.

Question is... do you think you can draw a Japanese animation director when they don't have creative control nor will they have a very large budget?

Case in point... Ghost in the Shell: the Standalone Complex is a multi-million production. Director is fairly new and is basically working with the original writer for the story... he doesn't have total creative control... the creator does.

When powerful directors can command large salaries and be able to work on their own projects as they please it's very unlikely that they'll bend to the will some punks from the US for very long if at all. If you have seen the other "unauthorized" eps of Animatrix like Matriculated and World Record, you know that the WachBros didn't really "like" them because they strayed.

HBO or some other network will not pay millions for a Matrix animated series. Guaranteed, there's really no market for it in the US yet.

I dunno- Spawn was on HBO for 3 seasons and it did fairly well. I'm kind of pissed they cut it off mid-story. At least with a true full anime series with a set number of episodes, this won't happen. BTW- Spawn is quite excellent, worth the $30 or so the whole series goes for. It's an interesting experiment- a cross between east/west animation styles.

When is Standalone Complex coming out in the US, and is it any good?

Well, not "Unauthorized" but rather... the WachBros didn't write it and they weren't exactly happy with the results in some cases... definitely not part of the Matrix canon.
