And the 24-85mm is just a kit lens. It contains 15 element lens, 12 groups.

The Nikon 70-200 VRII contains 21 elements in 16 groups with 7 of those elements ED glass.

I recently dissembled a 18-55 kit lens, really neat to see how they are constructed first hand.
