Can dogs be bipolar? Or have episodes? My Chihuahua Bruce has an attitude problem sometimes. Like if he's laying with me, and someone tries to touch him, he startes to growl, and gets ready to attack them...can I give him anything for this?

How is that bipolar??? He's protective over you cus of things you've allowed him to do. He keeps doing it cus you don't properly stop him from doing it. 99% of dog behavior problems are because of the owner, not cus of the dog. It's kind of sad that you just want to give your dog drugs rather than properly train him.

I don't want to drug my dog. I've only had him since April of this year, and I don't just let him get away with the way he acts. But he's seven years old, and I don't know how to make him stop. He's gone after my husband countless times, and he's bitten him once. I love Bruce, and he's as sweet as he can be to me, but it's getting to the point where everyone is getting tired of his little tiraids. I'm the only person who tried to defend his mood swings. Please don't jump to conclusions just because I asked if he could be drugged.

Umm if you are tired of the way he acts why don't you get him trained? You treat him like a little kid instead of a dog which is why he's protective over you. It won't stop until you stop it. It's not a mood swing what he does, it's the nature of dogs. How would anyone NOT jump to conclusions because you asked if you could drug your dog instead of training him properly?

Like I said, he's 7 yrs old, is it at all likely that he wouldn't take to a trainer, I mean the woman who had them before we did let them do way more that we let the other dogs do. They won't stay in a kennel (like a pet taxi), they won't sleep in the pet beds, and they don't listen. Oh, and God forbid you say "outside". I can't just get rid of them, thats what their last owner did, and I'd feel terrible

You need to watch It's Me or the Dog, there are many episodes that deal with this.

If you are sitting with him/laying with him and he attacks someone or even shows aggression, place him on the floor and ignore him for a bit. He should then associate that his aggression as not getting attention which is what he wants. Praise him when he does not show aggression when others come near you/him.
