It depends. I know people that I would call failures, although I am a hard judge of character, and if you ruin your image to me, you have to do something amazing to get a good image in my eyes. For your parents, as I said, it depends. If you are a drug addict, who stays out all night, and gets bad grades, I think it's fair for them to say that; however if you are a good student, and can hold responsibilities at home, then I think they are being harsh.
